Yes you will lose your door chime, no your check engine light won't come on. Do you have onstar? That would be my biggest concern. I Have installed many stereos in Gm cars and eliminated the dooor chime. its up to you, stay away from circuit city and best buy they just want to sell you accessories with a high profit margin. Go to a smaller shop with experienced installers and ask them about it. I would only buy a harness like that to keep onstar.

there are 2 harness you can use for some 99' and all 00' up GM. you can use the $20 harness, but you will lose your door chime, and more importantly you cant reset the check engine light if it comes up. the $120 harness fixes that. so to answer your question, no you dont have to, but it will be a prob in the future

More manufacturers are integrating more features (ie. keyless entry, security, door chimes, etc.) through the HU in vehicles.
I personally know of a car that has to have the original radio placed in the trunk (with a 15 foot harness) to keep these "features" intact when installing an aftermarket. Talk about a PITA.
So yes, pay the price and have it done right.

wow, I would ebay it and see the prices. Or try the website for the company of the stereo. Otherwise you may be screwed. I would get the wiring harness because it may void the warranty on the stereo...although I am no expert.
