My colleague at work said it was the latter (which I resent about, as I hate being corrected for my speech), but what is correct between the two?

Between the two, I wouldn't know. I've always known it as "there's nowt AS queer as folk" but it's a regional thing, so it will differ from person to person. There's probably one that's more common throughout the country, but I'd say either was perfectly valid.

Although a southerner. I think it's "Nowt so queer"... As "nowt" means "nothing".

Therefore the phrase would not make sense written;
"Nothing such queer as folk"

The phrase;
"Nothing as queer as folk"
Makes much more sense.

Sorry, but your colleague is right. Sort of...

The* such *that appears in your version, would give a different meaning .
