sodom and gomorrah had nothing to do with homosexuality. G-d destroyed the cities because the people there were deeply immoral and cruel, not because they were gay.
"Classical Jewish texts do not specifically indicate that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because the inhabitants were homosexual. Rather, they were destroyed because the inhabitants were generally depraved and uncompromisingly greedy. Rabbinic writings affirm that the primary crimes of the Sodomites were terrible and repeated economic crimes, both against each other and outsiders.
A rabbinic tradition, described in the Mishnah, postulates that the sin of Sodom was related to property: Sodomites believed that "what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours" (Abot), which is interpreted as a lack of compassion. Another rabbinic tradition is that these two wealthy cities treated visitors in a sadistic fashion. One example is the story of the "bed" that guests to Sodom were forced to sleep in: if they were too short they were stretched to fit it, and if they were too tall, they were cut up.(compare Procrustes)
The Talmud also recounts the incident of a young girl (some sources say it was a daughter of Lot) who gave some bread to a poor man who had entered the city. When the townspeople discovered her act of kindness, they smeared her body with honey and hung her from the city wall until she was stung to death by bees. (Sanhedrin 109a) It is this gruesome event (and her scream, in particular), the Talmud concludes, that are alluded to in the verse that heralds the city’s destruction: "So Hashem said, ‘Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah has become great, and because their sin has been very grave, I will descend and see…" (Genesis 18:20-21)"
EDIT
"Hey Jewishgirl - why is it called sodomy then??"
hebrew is not english. because the english language was primarily spoken and influenced by christians, who believe that G-d would destroy entire cities because of gay people, and so they took the name of the town of Sodom and used it as the word for the homosexual act. obviously. in hebrew there is no connection between the name of the town Sodom and words having to do with homosexuality. they are completely unrelated.

No because homosexuality was not the reason these two mythical cities were destroyed... the sins of the city are clearly outlined and homosexuality does not feature.
The bizarre fictional account of two angels threatened with gang rape by the townsmen happened after the town was already scheduled for destruction so that wasn't the reason for it's destruction, neither was that incident anything to do with homosexuality.
Rape is an act of violence not love, and attempted violent sex between men and angels is hardly same-sex ...angels and men are not even the same species. Gay sex does not involve sex between angels and men as far as I am aware.

Why do you say it was unprovoked? What do you know of it? Abraham asked God not to destroy it if there was one righteous person there. There was not. Do you believe that all in Sodom were homosexual? What was described regarding the encounter with the angels visiting Lot was one incident. God had determined to destroy that place before the incident. He does not go to such lengths without very good reason. God invented and approves of justice. No human can be more just than God, that does not make sense. If God destroys a thing, it is because that is what justice demands. If He holds back, that is what His mercy demands but justice must prevail in the end. Do not mistake God s mercy for an unwillingness to act. He gives everyone a lifetime of chances to declare their loyalty to Him, but His justice must be fulfilled in the end.
By the way, when Abraham spoke to God in this encounter, he was speaking to Jesus as He later became.

It was not necessarily because of homophobia that it was destroyed. It is because the laws for sheltering guests were violated. It is considered really bad even in liberal circles today to invite someone to dinner and then hand them over to be raped.

I love this fairy story.
the people want to fick Lot's guests, but he thinks that's bad form, so he says "OK if you want to fick someone, I've got a couple of daughters here, nice girls, very clean, no schmutter"
Lot's wife is killed simply because she happened to look back
later Lot's daughters get daddy drunk and have sex with him - yeah right, because we all know how easy it is to get it up when you're dead drunk - and he has a couple of healthy sons/grandsons.
I really love the bible since I stopped believing any of it :-)

According to Islamic teaching homosexual and lesbian were spoken by Allah the only one God as a provoked destruction of morals, faith and healthy of humans. It is against with Allah instruction that a man should get married to woman and woman should act as a woman not as a man and a man should not act as a wo- man. because it is against with God's creation..So in our holy book Al Qur'an surah 7 Al A'raaf (highest place) veres 80 up to 87 ans surah 15 Al Hijr verse 59 up to 77 Allah prohibited homosexual and lesbian to Luth prophet folloers because it humiliated Allah and it was called as an act that was cruel,dir-
ty and over the limit.
Allah punished them by giving them lightning with stone rain and all died. before dawn..
