We were looking at the nail caps but we were not sure if they would work. We can always cut or file her nails, but we are not sure we are comfortable with that, any suggestions?

You can file them with a regular emory board..Just file the tips a bit, every few days..Puppies don't seem to mind this much, and they get used to it..When you are cuddling, and loving on the puppy, be sure to handle her feet a lot, so it is non threatening..

You should have thought of that first. Dogs have nails. Yes, they have to be kept cut short for a lot of reasons. The nails should not hurt the floor at all. No more than a pair of high heel shoes. A chi is not a whole lot of dog. I have one.

Your vet should be happy to show you how to do the nails proper. If you start doing them now and do regularly then the pup will not make a fuss when done. Actually at this stage you will find that human nail clippers will take care of the nail tip. Make it a fun routine, do a few at a time, play a little, do a few more. Just take off the tips.
I do my chi every few weeks as need. She's gotten pretty ok with it. I reward with a few milkbones. Never let the nails get where they are clicking on the floor. If you can hear the nails then they are too long. It can hurt the feet. I assume you take care of your own nails and dog nails are no diff. You don't clip into the pink part, just the white tips. If black nails then just start with taking off a smidge of the pointy sharp tips. If you happen to cut too short and bleeds just hold a tissue to it.

Find yourself a reputable pet groomer in your area, and have the nails professionally clipped.
There is a vein that runs in the dogs nails, and especially with small breeds, if the nails have not been trimmed this vein can be close to the end of the nails. As they are clipped, the vein retracts.
Regarding the caps, I would consult your vet before I put them on a puppy. I have never used them, but, I would fear the puppy chewing on them.
Good Luck.

Clipping their nails is really quite easy.Just make sure you have good light and don't cut to close to the bloodline. You may like to take her to the groomer the first time and get them to show you.

we haven't had a problem with puppy claws and wood floors. just rbuy a proper puppy nail clipper and clip them whenever u see them getting long. and walk the pup on concrete if possible when taking for walks coz it wears down their nails abit.

My mother in law brings her chihuahua to the groomer and they clip his nails. That seems to do the trick. and its not that expensive. id say do it yourself, but I would be afraid of going down too far.
