every so often when i see my boy friend he takes his hat off and then puts it back on

Exactly. You're probably over-thinking it. Why must every little thing mean something? He just felt like taking your hat, putting it on, and taking a picture with it. He was having a good time.

It is an old fashioned but not dead courtesy of a man taking his hat off, for a lady, or when going inside. It is a show of respect for the lady or for the home. I often do it myself.

As everyone has said before me, it's a greeting & sign of respect, but I feel a little saddened that this question even has to be asked! Charming little gestures like that are so rare nowadays.

It's a sign of respect towards women. It's rare that you see chivalry anymore and it sure is nice when a man does that and other things like holding the door open ect...

it's a sign of respect. think of the olden day's when they would take their hats off and bow down for a lady, it essentially means after you.

It's an old school mannerism of politeness. If it's your boyfriend thats sort of sweet, but some random guy, it would seem fake, I think.
