I have always thought 18 was a good age due to the fact that teenagers want to party it up and they should get it out of there system by the time they become adults. By the time they turn 21 they will (hopefully) be more responsible and know there limits and conduct themselves as adults.

It really doesn't matter what the drinking age is, people are going to drink regardless of what the law says. It's possible that by lowering the drinking age kids wouldn't bother drinking because at a young age kids just want to try things that they're not allowed to do. Isn't that half the fun?? In my family we were allowed to drink at HOME at the age of 14 if it was around the campfire or at christmas, just social drinking and only a few. I think it helped curb the desire to go out and sneak it behind my family's back. There are 4 kids in my family (myself included) and none of us has a problem with alcohol, we drink socially and responsibly - ages 19, 21, 23, 25. Also have one parent that does have a drinking problem, so we've been exposed to that. I say that parents should use their discretion with their children and don't put everything totally off limits because of 'rules', if the kids are responsible and mature, allow them some benefits for being that way. Treat them like adults and they will often respect you more.

Society places too much emphasis on and 'age limit' for drinking. In Australia it is 18. I have hear that in the US it is 21.

However being of European origin, I was always taught by my parents that if I wanted a drink, it's in the cabinet go help yourself, just drink it at home. Guess what, I hardly ever drank but when I did it was never a big deal.

Unfortunately I have seen many Australians binge drink simply because alcohol has been made taboo so as soon as they are of a legal age (and in a lot of cases before that too) they binge drink. Silly because they have not been told the value of responsibility.

If only we can enshrine such values into people then perhaps the incidence of alcohol abuse will decline and people will see that getting intoxicated in public is a shameful act.

Unfortunately politicians have polarised the debate and so any effort to change the way society views alcohol and its consumption must first face the inertia of decades of poor adult role models.

I think the drinking age should be lowered drastically. We as a country have the most problems with drunk driving and yet we have the highest age limit. If you learn how to handle it at a younger age then you are less likely to abuse it. i think, as radical as it sounds, it should be around 14-16, with restrictions.

I think we should do away with all alcohol drinks. We really don't need them and they just cause problems. I think they will go the way of tobacco as a quaint old but unhealthy activity.

it should be dependant on individuals - if you can drink and not act like an idiot, cause damage to people and property and / or drink drive then you have proved you can drink reponsibly. Others should be banned - they are w*nkers!

18- Simple because you can go to War and die for your country but you can't walk into a bar and legally drink a beer.

I think that you should be able to when you turn a teenager. Then if you do it and don't like it, that means you won't waste you're money to have to go and buy it all the time!
