I have an alter in my home, in fact I am looking at it right now. It has things that represent the elements, earth air fire and water, a few of my tools on it some holy water, a few oils, incense, My Goddess and God candle pictures of my friends, my animales and a few dead reletives, to remind me of them and the Pentecle behind it all. The reason I have an alter is, first a blessing for my house from the Gods and also it is a place to sit, pray, meditate leave small sacrifices like a small flower, or coin to the God and Goddess for answering a small prayer, and just to sit in the presence of my Gods. It is not of any religion to have an alter in your house. Catholics, Jewish, Pagans, followers of Santeria, Hindus and many other religions have alters to their gods in the house, many other cultures even have alters for the dead, with momentos of the dearly departed, and a few offerings of things they like on them. It is a way to bring the Divine into your home, and ask for help on a daily basis and a good way to remind youself that the Divine is always watching, and always there to aid you. I know intuitively as a pagan that yes my Gods are always with me and I can pray anywhere but an alter is not just for that, it is a place of honoring the Gods, honoring yourself and your life and the things that are dear to you.

An Episcopal priest might have an altar in his home, but this would almost constitute a house-church. For Catholics, an altar in a home is illicit unless you have a license from the local Bishop to maintain an oratory.
Most of the answers in this thread are metaphorical for what is technically a shine.

Although I do not practice a religion as an adult, I was raised a Catholic and have a lot of childhood memories surrounding things like rosary beads, prayer cards, a cross my dad wore when he was studying to become a priest, etc....I made an altar by my bed and light candles. Mostly I do this in an attempt to keep an agrssive and violent entity away..........but it doesn't help as much as I would like. It comes and goes. And is becoming more agressive as the years go by when it does return.

Yes I do it is in my bedroom. I use it every morning. I like having private space. I also have a space outside where I can bring my things to enjoy nature and be close to the earth. Min has stones to be close to the earth, a large piece of marble made by a friend for me, my athame, an incense burner for air, a brazier to hold fire and a shell for water. I also have some angels that my grandmother gave me. And in my case I have a vessal that holds money. To keep money coming my way. I never use any money I put in the vessal. Hope this helps.
