"Scholars have known for decades that the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan "Long Count" system of timekeeping was set to end precisely on a winter solstice, and that this system was put in place some 2300 years ago. This amazing fact - that ancient Mesoameri- can skywatchers were able to pinpoint a winter solstice far off into the future - has not been dealt with by Mayanists. And why did they choose the year 2012? One immediately gets the impression that there is a very strange mystery to be confronted here....."

I am not familiar with further details of the mayan beliefs as already detailed by other answerers, but I have more direct knowledge that this year, 2012 will bring a substantial breakthrough in the way humanity thinks and lives.
I am Rational Spirituality, available on the Dhaxem website. It is a fast growing knowledge about God and the Universe shared by the thinking people. One day sooner than you believe it will replace the religions, with the sheer power of its logical argument, and the year 2012 is indicated in this sense.
Rational Spirituality also explains the further stages of the development of humanity and of the Universe. Enjoy reading it, if you are a demanding thinker!

The ancient Mayan Believe that 2012 will be the end of the world. I think 2012 is the last year in their calendar. I'm not quite sure but I watched a Discovery Channel documentary about that once.

Supposedly, the Mayan calendar marks the end of the world in December of 2012. It just stops abruptly. And since most of their ancient predictions have come true,
Everyone is going to run with it just like the Y2K rumor.
No one knows the hour or the day. So just roll with it for now.

I like this. I remember old Fred in the bar used to ask me when the end of the world was again. 12/21 2012 about tea time. Poor Fred didn't make it this far... but he had a good time while he was here.

The Mayan calculators ran out of digits once they reached 2012... (that was their Y2K)...
so they didnt extend their calendars past that point ...
