You know - exams etc.

This is meant to accompany my previous question. It’s not a duplicate, as this deals with education - which deals with the written word all the time.

Note: I'm talking about the English-educated, not foreign language students, so please understand. And of course, I am aware that many of us are highly capable writers. You know what my question refers to. I can foresee darts coming my way - but I'll say what I shall say.

Maybe Yahoo Answers should have 'how to understand text answers' eg
u = you
ne = any
enuf = enough
do =does
no = know
or even a spell checker.now that would be a good idea!!!
But to be honest the English language is changing..already new words have appeared in the English dictionary so after a few more years text dictionaries will appear alongside the English one, they have already changed to works of Shakespeare so students can understand his works.sad eh

Language is a living thing. Just as Olde English has been supplanted by the 'modern' version we use today, it is possible that the abbreviated form that we see on Y!A or in text messages becomes the 'new' standard in the future. But we are not there yet.

Today, while the abbreviated English is on the margins, people who solely use it will have major problems in school. The question is whether these people can read 'modern' English despite writing in the abbreviated form. If they do, then apart from English, or subjects that require much language such as history... they could do well. Language is not much of a hindrance for maths or sciences for example...

I would make a presumption and say that we would not get very far. I also have taken notice of the seemingly bad grammar and anomalous language that have hastily been written on these boards. But it is not necessarily the fault of the writer or their educational background. We are a culture that depends on software that incorporates spell-check and thesauruses in the programs. Yahoo! Answers allows only a simple form of that function, thus creating an environment that appears to showcase horrific language skills. That of course does not excuse the obvious underprivileged education system in this country. But that’s another matter.

Getting divorced is 'the thing to do'! nowadays. If you think this generation is bad, wait until it's time for these children to be adults & then you'll see bad. Parents or should I say people do not care anymore. They believe it's the school system that should instill values & morals (i think), but all of this comes from the home. You are completely right. People makes mistakes and hopefully learn from them, but some people just don't get it & get stuck in this cycle. Once they they think they got the whole world figured out, it's too late.

Its because they didn't get very far in school that they write like this. The English language is spoken and written so badly now, I think everyone uses colloquial English so they can be understood.
Especially when a commentator on ITV maintained that Madonna got her child because she was, quote, 'more richer'. Lovely use of English.
And I don't think many of them can see properly either or they might have noticed a little tick with 'Check Spelling' by its side above the answer box. No excuse for incorrect spelling..

Most Yahoo! answers are a pretty good indication of the intelligence quotient of the writer (being, in the main, near or about that of a root vegetable). So, to answer your question, no further than the janitor's office.

An excellent question.
I have posted similar questions on YA.
You are not going to get much joy here. The majority think that is 'cool' to do text in the imbecile manner that they do.
It is sad !!

...and just look at some of the nerd answers that you've got !!

President of the USA. Or PM of the UK. In spite of an expensive education, he has confessed to never reading books.

I agree, although it doesn't bother me quite as much as it seems to bother you.

The younger ones here (Damn, just made myself seem old!) are learning bad grammar and to a lesser extent, spelling. Hopefully they will ignore the spelling and grammar in this site and on text messaging and consult their parents/schoolteachers before using what they've seen.

i don't think we'd get very far at all really. So its a very good job that this isn't an exam or i'd already be marked down for no capital letters for 'i' and no apostrophe between the its.
