You can't judge art and artists that way "the best", it is about personal preferance. The type of art you like, how it affects your mood, and visually captivates your mind. Art is something that should be felt not just looked at. My favorite artists are Klimt and Kandinsky. I love color, lines, and abstract.

It really depends on the era and the style. I love Michelangelo's work but I likewise enjoy Rembrandt, Vermeer; Rubens, El Greco, Velazquez, Renoir and a host of contemporary painters, as well. None can deny that Da Vinci was a skilled painter but he is famous because of how versatile a genius he was as he extended himself into anatomy, architecture, physics, etc., but his contemporary was by far more gifted in his two specialties, painting and sculpturing... Michelangelo!

Art is not like the Olympic Games, it is not necessary to have a champion and brag about it.

You like what you really like, also one of the worst painter in the world can make you happy with some paintstrokes on a canvas(I'm thinking of Henri Rousseau, called le Douanier...).

Your choice could be "brainy" because of your studies or simply by taste or choice. And may vary with time, age and mood, yours and of the artist.

Be happy with it: that's the world of paintings!

To give a definitive answer one would have to agree there is some sort of competition for the 'best' artist. Unfortunately (or fortunately) art is NOT competitive. It exists in a completely non-competitive world of its own. This is a foreign idea to most of our American culture and the underlying reason art is little understood in our general society today.A better question would have been,"Who is your favourite artist in the world?". If that were the question posed my answer would be Milton Avery. I love his stuff!

Michelangelo. I adore his work. There are a lot of really talented painters, but I love Michelangelo the best. All of his work was gorgeous, not just his paintings.

GOD is the painter of the world...
"best" painter in the world? no one.. in what category?
some of them good in another aspect than other.
you can compare Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Dali, Diego Riviera or Picasso but can't choose one as the best of all.
:)

I guess the answer depends on your definition of "best"
Is it most popular? most prolific? most valuable? most well known.
I think Van Gogh is the most valuable (very small number of paintings but all are sold for millions)
Renoir is probably the most popular (many of his are very recognizable and copied commercially for all types of things like wall paper, and cloth prints)
Dali or Warhol are the most prolific, they sold many, many works in their life time. 3 or 4 times most all modern painters
Then if you think being well known is the "best" then I would have to say Di Vinchi ( he didn't paint very much but he didn't have to with works like "the last supper" and the Mona Lisa.

Bob of Bob's Home Finishing. He does a mean wall, and doesn't drip on the trim.
