First, please no wise cracks.

I'm in a long-term, serious relationship with a woman who lives in Mexico. Though she thinks she may be more comfortable if we live together there before being engaged, I want to also look at the possibility of us living here in the U.S. Though living with her in Mexico and commuting to San Diego is possible, it would be more difficult than living together in the San Diego area. I know about the fiance visa, but many couples in the U.S. choose to live together first before becoming engaged, which we want to do. Is there a way, a type of visa, that will give her the opportunity to live with me in the U.S., and even better, work here at the same time?

She has a tourist visa that lets her come and go a few times each month, but I'm looking for one that would let her stay here up to six months and give her the opportunity to also go back when she wants to visit her family.

A multiple entry, B1/B2 tourist visa should allow her to come and go as she pleases, and probably remain for six months. However, work will not be authorized. If she does get the visa, and she then violates the terms and conditions, it will make your future more difficult with DHS/CIS.

If you are both really serious then a fiancee visa is worth looking at. At one time it was much better for the foreigner to come to the USA and get married (which must be within 90 days) but I do believe the draconian rules Immigration enforced when you got married abroad have been relaxed.

I came here five years ago on a fiance visa. We engaged an attorney who specializes in immigration matters. It costs a bit of money ($6,000 so far) but it has been worth every penny. The $6,000 has been spread out over the five years and includes the costs I have just paid to apply for citizenship.

try a temporary work visa. of course, she'd have to get a job here. but you might be able to sponsor her.

No, if you want to be with her, then marry her. It's the only way.
