I don't know without a photo, but speaking of photos, you should post some of the dog around the neighborhood where you found the dog and maybe go door to door asking if anyone has lost it as it sounds like someone is probably beside themselves looking for it right now.
Also post an ad in the paper for a found dog if that's possible, and take it to a vet or local shelter to to have it scanned for a microchip which may identify it. Most shelters also have lost and found forms to fill out.

Actually I'd suggest a trip to bookstore to look at the dog picture books. You'll find many showing all the breeds. If it is a mix you just look at the closest matches. It's kind of a guess work situation unless it matches a certain breed. I am glad you reported it. Maybe call local vets to report also.

I would recommend going to the AKC website to view dog breeds. With all the new mixed crosses it could be a Hybrid as well. Blessings, Kelly

Maltese?
Shih Tzu?
Lhasa ?
Westie?
Bichon?
American Kennel Club has breed pics and profiles of dogs. www.akc.org
Petfinder.com has pictures of lots of small breeds. Just click on the breed names and check out the different little dogs.
I hope you try to find it's owner. Someone has cared for this dog.

if it looks like a big ball of cotton and it's really small but alert it might be a west highland terrier.

akc.org would help, if its a purebred dog.
It could be a West Highland, lhasa apo, shih tzu, or a few others, but they are fairly common dogs, so I'd start there.

It is most likely a maltese terrier, shih tzu or lhasa apso...there is not really enough information to help me figure it out..perhaps go to pedigree.com, this should be able to help.
