My sister has been complaining of constipation and gassyness that she says has lasted a few months now, says that she has tried taking laxatives that didn't work, but won't go see a doctor about it. Any ideas on what's wrong with her?

It's called colonic blockage. If she drinks alcohol then that will only exacerbate the problem due to the fact that alcohol destroys the essential stomach Flora that digest food. What happens is that the food spends way to much time in the digestive system causing the increase in gases which culminate in the form of flatulence. Extreme bloating can also result and cause a great deal of discomfort. Getting to a doctor is primary but if she wont go then I would suggest that she go on a simple diet. Let the entire digestive system empty itself out. When she feels hungry she should drink plenty of water to flush out her system. But really I urge her to get to a gastro enterologist. This is really not the place to seek medical advice. Try to convince her to go to the doctor.

She needs to see a doctor. Could be several things including a bowel obstruction.
