Depression is something that will occur in many people's
lives, for various reasons. But the "normal" occurrence of
a plunge in mood due to stressful events in your life,
usually doesn't last very long, before a person's natural
resilience responds to the environment of friends and
family.
Treatment for depression and anxiety may be needed if you
experience persistent, multiple symptoms for more than two
weeks. These may include a combination of half or more of
the following:
* Sleeplessness, insomnia
* Ongoing negative moods for no reason
* Lack of energy or ambition
* Feeling helpless or worthless
* Believing nobody cares
* Hyper states like edginess or nervousness
* Inability to make decisions or concentrate on things
* Physical aches and pains that don't go away
* Suicidal thoughts
Depending on the condition of a depressed person, they may
require admission to a depression treatment center, where
they can be monitored while receiving psychological
counseling and medication therapy.
Depression is an emotional disorder, and nothing to be
ashamed of. But often, people who are depressed are
suffering from negative thoughts about themselves, and the
illness can feed on that.
If you recognize five or more of the above symptoms in
someone you love, talk to them about how they feel. If
they won't talk to you, go to their family, friends, or
even their doctor.
Treatment may be as simple as counseling and medication
that can be undertaken while in their own environment, or
the doctor may recommend a short stay in a depression
treatment facility to get them back on an even keel.
The medications available have redefined the treatment for
depression and anxiety, giving patients a break from the
emotional state that is weighing them down, while they
receive therapy to resolve the issues that caused their
illness.

Some people say to go to a psychologist, and other people think medication. Zoloft and other drugs are supposed to help. I don't really know if you can so self-help with it or not, but I know when I was hurt years ago, I went through a long period of depression and I started doing crafts to occupy myself. It helped me, and it might help other people. Hobbies, reading, playing internet games, maybe even painting, or if you're able get more physical, do some exercise like walking, jogging or playing ball. It all helps because you don't have time to think about the bad stuff.
Bless you!

Okey first of all try to find the root cause of his depression . : Might be due to a girl or maybe he is not good in studies or he is pressurized from his family and he thinks that he is not able to perform up-to their expectations. if it is due to a girl , the best way would be to have some drinks and laugh it out , i am very serious about this , this works on most boys. After that hang out with him alone or in groups if it is due to his studies , then you seriously need to provoke him to look for other professions that he can do. At 23 , i think he would be in his final year , his major worry should be his grades and his future jobs. With bad grades its very hard to find engineering jobs in India or anywhere else. Maybe suggest him to take a year off and complete his studies the next year. For boosting his morale , you need to make him do things he is good at like playing Musical instruments , or theatre or any sports, something like that. Some sort of appreciation in anything he does will do wonders. If nothing works take him to a doctor, but this would be the last thing i will recommend because if you take him to a doctor straightaway , he will feel very low about himself, his self-esteem would get hurt. Well best of luck

Go out with people who are positive and laugh a lot. Do not stay inside on the couch watching television, Try to be outside as much as possible and occupy your mind with creative thoughts. Keep your hands active, exercise, do jogging with other people, find a group where you will be comfortable to talk with people you trust.
Remember, you are the one who 's got the choice of being happy or not. Socialize, do sports, anything to do with others. Avoid loneliness.

See a mental health specialist... and don't wait a minute longer than you have to. It feels really good to be yourself again and they will help you get there.
Your psychitrist will probably start you on an appropriate medication (a seratonin reuptake inhibiter, most likely) and he will very likely perscribe a sleep aide or an antianxiety medication, too, but most importantly, he'll put into the hands of a trained counselor - someone you can really talk to - and that's when things start getting much, much better for you... Believe me.
