you file taxes every year no matter how long you work at a job. The state and federal tax have a listing of exactly how much you will get back and if under a certain amout will get all taxes back. You can also if you qualify and have children receive a federal tax return on them as long as under or at a certain amount of money for state called earned income tax.

It is not how long your work, but how much you make that will determine whether you need to file tax return.
If a tax payer make less than her standard deduction and exemption combined, then there is no need to file federal income tax return. This minimum amount is referred to as Gross Income Filing Requirement. However, there is one exception. If you have taken Earned Income Credit (EIC) and Box 9 of your W2 will show the amount you taken, then you must file a return.
If you are expecting to file as Single, your 2006 Standard deduction is $5150, and Exemption amount is $3300. This means if you keep your income less than $8450, then you don't have to file. You income include: wages, tips, alimony, interest, investment income and unemployment benefits.
If you have a different filing status, older than 65, or blind, your Gross Income Filing Requirement would be different.
For information about other filing status and the latest 2006 standard deduction and exemption amounts update:

Best wishes.

It depends on the income and whether or not you can be claimed as a dependent, not the length of time you have been at a job. If you are single you must file a 2005 return if your income was more than $8,200. It will be a couple of hundred dollars more than that for 2006 most likely. If you can be claimed as a dependent (even if the other person does not claim you) there are stricter rules. See the IRS website for more info, at the link below.

You will have to file a return if you made one dollar and money was held out for federal income tax. Each tax year is inclusive. If you are single in 2006 you will have a standard deduction amount of 5,100 and a personal exemption amount of 3,250 for a total of 8,350 so if you make less than that you will be getting a total refund of all federal income tax withheld from your paycheck.

In addition to skip's answer, you should file a tax return if you are due a refund even if you technically don't have to file. You won't get a refund if you don't file.
