In the 1984 Mustang 5.0 it was bronze. In 85 when they went roller motor they switched out to steel from then on. I would assume that is the case with the Capri as well. You can have the distributor rebuilt and recurved at the same time which may be a better way of going. A speed shop can help you with this. If your going to the trouble of pulling the distribute why put a well used part in that would jeopardize your reliability. Get a new one or rebuild it and do it right the first time.

The gear actually should be made of bronze. Most gears to the distributor are. It makes contact with the iron of the camshaft. The distributor is made to fit one type of engine only. It would function if it came from the same type of engine with an automatic transmission but the advance curve (the timing with respect to engine speed) would be a little different. You would lose a little gas mileage and performance.
