No, it's not fair, but it does happen. It isn't fair because it's a complete invasion of privacy. Just because someone isn't 18, doesn't exclude them from the right to privacy. If the parents are worried about what kind of e-mails they're receiving, or who they're receiving e-mail from, they shouldn't allow them to have an e-mail account at all.

It is fair for them because they can be held liable for any illegal things you do. If they know you are doing something, they can stop you and perhaps bypass any legal situtations.
It is unfair for you, because you are a person with a need for privacy, you are an individual with that need. Unfortunately, you are considered a child until you are 18 (19 in some states) and that means they have to pay if you mess up.
They also don't want some perv pedophile coming after you and want to make sure no one like that is writing you anything, especially if you are a myspace frequenter.
So, all in all, it is fair. They have to be responsible for you.

It's fair if you're under 18 years of age since legally they can be held responsible for your "mistakes." But if you have a decent relationship with them, don't cause trouble, and are a responsible person, then I don't see any reason why they'd need to read your emails.

Normally people don't go into their kids mail unless they suspect something is wrong. If they do and see it is all innocent and decent they probably won't go there very often. You didn't say how old you are so, I would say you are probably underage. If they pay your room and board and phone, and computer use, then you have no choice. After all they are only sharing what is theirs with you.... Until you support yourself and are out on your own it is fair.

Fair has nothing to do with it. You are the most precious thing in their lives and they are responsible for you. Your safety is far more important that being fair. You will understand this better when you have kids of your own.

Totally fair. They own the computer, your room, the roof over your head, the utilities that keep you warm, the water you drink, the food in the refridgerator and the air that you breathe. When you are self supporting and on your own, you can have private messages.
What's on there that they shouldn't see anyway?
