In some Eastern religions, and in my own practice, fasting is observed simply for the physiological effects. After three days without food, the body begins burning ketones, and this starts making some crazy things happen in the mind--for many, this is an easier way to have spiritual experiences as it alters the perception.

It must be the right kind of fasting to matter.
Attitude has everything to do with it.
A person isn't to appear to be fasting to the public. Fasting shows you how much you need God, that you can't make it in life without Him.
You don't starve yourself to death

Fasting is a denial of the flesh. Our bodies purify themselves when a fast is made.
As the needs of the body begin to diminish, the needs of the spirit rise to the surface, and you will find the voice of the Lord is much more easily heard.

It's about denying yourself and focusing entirely on God. Sometimes we just need to drop what we think is important in life and remember what is really important...and that is God.
You don't starve when you fast as your body soon gets accustomed to it.

fasting has various physiological effects which may make people seeking spiritual growth interested in it. I don't know about god, and I would go around fasting without researching the idea a bit first.

The way i was taught
is that when we fast we see what the poor and hungry people go through everyday and we should be thankful that we have food on our table three times a day, when other people might not even have food on their plate

Its not God's wants or wills but man's.
You forget one important fact that separates all that man does here on earth from God himself.
FREE WILL
This allows man to do as he wants, to kill each other, to starve, to start wars, etc. Free will allows all this, God can't impede on what he has given us.
But you can ask for his protection from it all...he will offer that.

Fasting is by no means starving yourself. Jesus fasted for Forty days in the desert. if its good enough for Him, its good enough for me.

Jesus said "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God" bread made by human hands will help you grow physically, the bread of God help you grow spiritually and will give you eternal life.

there is no reason to starve yourself. god wants you to be healthy - why else would he have created you?
if someone is asking you to starve yourself it's people, not god. don't ask me why people do things - people are weird.
