Well, when I ask God for something, guidance, understanding etc... He gives it to me because in the Bible, His Word, it says

<<"If you ask anything in My name, I will do it." John 14:14>>

<<"And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the LORD will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven." James 5:15>>

Many times God knows a better way, though.
I ask for a lot of things (wisdom, understanding, help in making choices, healing etc...), and in the end I get them but in a far different way than expected. When asking God for things, it's important to be open to His will.

<<"Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, "if the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."" James 4:14, 15>>

Sometimes people ask and do not receive for this one reason:

<<"You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures." James 4:3>>

<<"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Hebrews 11:6>>

A relationship with God is a great thing, we don't pray to Him just so that we can get material things. We should pray to Him so that we can understand His Word more, that we can understand life, and His purpose for us and ALSO we pray in worship, not only asking Him for what He can do, but thanking Him for what He has done and what we can do for Him.

<<"Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold." Proverbs 3:13,14>>

<<"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7)>>

<<"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." James 1:5-8>>

That passage is talking about gaining wisdom. The Bible talks a
lot about wisdom and how you must get it.
So, for me, when I pray I pray in faith that God will give it, according to His will. If He knows a better way, then fine, I know He is a rewarder of those who seek Him diligently. But I am also careful not to ask for selfish things. I know He will provide for me and my family, and I praise Him for that. But it's not like I'm going to go asking Him for an i-pod cuz I know He'll provide it and He's a rewarder.

<<"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. Dor where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21>>

!!!!<<"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God" Philippians 4:6>>!!!!

<<"Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content." Philippians 4:11>>

I hope that was of any help. God bless :)

This might sound corny, but I think sometimes He knows things we ask for aren't as good for us as we might think, or he wants us to grow from the experience of doing without it, or he is about to give us something even better. Or our not getting our wish could be a part of His plan for us and/or for another person. Think of how often you or another person has grown and/or had really good things happen, because of getting stronger, or having new experiences, in the wake of tough times.

Of course, I felt bad when I miscarried my first baby. But then I got pregnant soon again, and I have a wonderful son (now age 22!) that I couldn't ever have had if I had had the first one (because that egg and sperm would never have met b/c I'd already have been preg. with the first baby). So anyway, say I had asked Him not to let those first complications turn into a miscarriage? But I did end up with a great outcome anyway, if not what I first hoped for.

People pray, usually for something good like "I need money to pay the bills so I can feed my kids" etc..., and then to them, when they dont get a big chunk of change, they say that God didnt answer their prayer. Well first of all, we dont work on Gods time. We cant see the big picture. Im guessing those kids never actually died of starvation, so God did provide. But maybe he didnt provide you with tons of money b/c you didnt earn it. Maybe he provided you with a job opportunity that would have been more work but it would have made you more money. You passed up the offer b/c you didnt want to work that hard. So my point is that God answers everyones prayers. Sometimes however, we dont see either that we are the problem, or that we simply have to wait. Waiting is just to hard for some so they'd blame God instead.

If GOD B4ME,
I Think that this verse sums it up:
Hebrews 11:39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

If I don't get it down here, it will be obtained up there.

I’ll tell you a true story.
A woman kept praying for God to touch her husband’s heart so they could reconcile. See, he dumped her and moved in with another woman. But this wife was sure that with God’s help her marriage could still be saved.
But God didn’t seem to be listening to her prayers. Then she found out her husband had been cheating on her throughout her entire marriage.
She eventually moved on and met another man, truly wonderful and now she has a wonderful life with a Christian husband.
God knew her life would have gone on in misery with the first cheating husband.
When we pray it is fine to ask God for what we want, but always remember that he knows best.
His Will, not our will.

Yes. I know this is a simple answer but here goes. Sometimes we ask for things but God has other plans for us. I'm pretty sure that eventually we will realize why our prayers were unanswered. Most likely, even though we don't realize it at the time, it's for the better. It's all in God's hands. He has it all planned out for us. He knows what is best for us.

Many times we ask outside of God's will for our lives. It's like a 6 year old asking for a motor bike, would you come through for him?

I try not to ask God for material things. I ask for comfort, or help in a situation that might make me nervous - going to the dentist, strentgh in a situation. So I always feel that I get an answer in the above kinds of situations

My ex-wife ran around for a few years when I became a Christian, finally left and we went through an ugly divorce... 4 kids and 20 years married. She hooked up with a biker/ drug dealer and they got married... my young son lived with them.... I called one day to talk to him and the guy's dad answered, he was dying of cancer... we talked and prayed and he accepted Christ over the phone! They said he was changed... died two months later... but so much of what had happened made sense to me. He is a great God!

Yes. Because He had something greater for me waiting down the road. My impatient human spirit wanted what I wanted and NOW but He knew better and taught me that in patience comes even greater reward!
