Why address the question to Christians alone, when many other religions rely on prayer, as well?
Prayer can be for worship, but it's often a way of connecting with the divine.
It's hardly egotistical to want to connect with someone you love.
What prayer probably shouldn't be, in my opinion, is a constant beg-a-thon, as if God were running some big candy store in the sky. Not every prayer has to be asking for something.

I pray because I want to have a relationship with my God, and I can't do that without talking to Him. I ask for what I want or what I think I want, He already meets all my needs. I live my life to worship Him, and it is egotistical to believe that we are the center of this Universe and that we are in no need of a Savior.

True God knows everything I need, sometimes better than me. I guess people say pray, I just talk to God. People were created for a relationship with God. But, He did create. So, it someones decision if they feel they can live without God. That why we see the world in it's present condition. People want to not believe yet blame God, it funny to me. But, people want no God so we see the results of doing it on our own. I think people have done a good job without God. But, when my time come, I will be with God.

Romans 8:26, 27 shows that the Christian, under certain circumstances, will not know just what to pray for; but his unuttered ‘groanings’ are nonetheless understood by God.
So God knows what we need before we ask Him. (Matthew 6:8; Psalm 139:4) Prayer shows that we have faith in God and view him as the Source of “every good gift and every perfect present.” (James 1:17; Hebrews 11:6) We show our faith in Him through our prayers and also strengthen our relationship with him. He is a beloved Father.

I took the advice of one of your readers and read your profile.
But the reason I pray and I know that God hears me is because it is my chance to talk and communicate with God. That is what prayer is. It's not a case that God is being egotistical by asking me to pray. It's a case that He desires fellowship with me. And as a friend, and a spiritual father, he loves to help me through difficult situations. Yes, I go through hard times, but I learn from those hard times.
Sure God knows what we need.
But let's take an analogy. Your dad probably knows you need things, but does he just give things to you or does he sometimes wait to see if you will ask for them? If so, why? Probably because he wants to know that this is something that is important to you and if you are sincere about this issue. That's the same way with prayer.

As a father sometimes I wait for my kids to ask for things too. I know that the baby wants a cup, or that my daughter wants pancakes. But the first need to learn to speak more and the second needs time to decide what she wants. Also we sometimes wait for a child to come and say that he is sorry for misbehaving. He may need to think through his actions and the consequences. It might take some time. God is the perfect Father. If I can recognize these few occasions where it is best to wait for a child to ask, how many more can he see?
Egotistical would be someone who thinks they know better than the God who spoke and created the universe.

Yanno, I just went to your profile... I feel sorry for you. I do not and cannot understand why some people are so easily misled into thinking the way you do. What exactly has Christianity done to you to make you have hatred for Christians? You are no different than the terrorists that blow up innocent people. You just haven't strapped the bomb on yet... but you are certainly brainwashed enough that I wouldn't be surprised if it was easy to get you to do it.
Why would you think God would be egotistical for wanting you to talk to him? Isn't it rather egotistical for you to think you weren't created by God? God isn't a rich parent that spoils their kid by giving them everything they want, you must ask for your needs but also ask for the needs of others... this is a concept you obviously wouldn't understand.
I trully feel sorry for you, you obviously live a miserable life.

Let me answer that in an analogy form ..If you were a Father and you had kids would you want your children to talk to you?..of course you would, and just because I as a Mother might know that my son wants money as soon as I see him coming to me does that mean I should just whip out my purse and hand it to him with? I don't like being taken for granite and I am sure God feels the same way. And I would like to remind you that his word says " you have not because you ask not" God wants a relationship with us.

Of course God knows what we need - better than we do. We only know what we want. We pray for God's guidance to show us His will and ask in faith believing He will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory.
Is it egotistical for me as a mother to want my children to look up to me, to respect me, to love me and to want to be like me? God desiring that relationship with me was a concept I couldn't really grasp either until I became a parent. Based on some of the other questions you've asked regarding abortion I'm willing to be you are NOT a parent. You will be able to understand it better then.
Just keep searching sweetie and maybe one day you will find the truth!

Yes,Jehovah already knows all our needs.
Consider this example: A store owner may offer a gift to some of his customers. However,to receive this gift, the customers must come to the owner and claim it.Those unwilling to make the effort to do so would show that they do not really appreciate the offer.Similarly, neglecting to make our petitions known in prayer would show a lack of appreciation for what Jehovah provides.Jesus said:"Ask and you will receive."(John 16:24).In this way,we demonstrate our reliance on God.
No one is forced to offer worship to God.Rev.4:11 tells us:"You are worthy,Jehovah, even our God,to receive the glory, and the honor, and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created."Those that do recognize that Jehovah deserves the praise and in worshiping Him show that they are grateful for his many provisions.
