As a UK citizen in U.S.A with a J-1 visa - Can I apply for an Indian Visa to work for there for 6 months?

Currently studying at Roosevelt University, Chicago, but for next semester I want to help those that are less fortunate in India. Can i obtain an Indian visa here in the States, even if i am on a student visa from UK?

Please help and point me in the right direction.

YES, apply at Indian consulate..

Check with your British Consolate Office
