I think it's unnecessarily confusing. It sets the kid up for a lifetime of correcting people when they think he or she is the opposite gender.

Courtney, Ashley, Whitney, Cary, Marion, were ALL once thought of as only BOY'S names, not girls. John Wayne, the greatest He-Man movie hero of all time was really named Marion Johnson at birth! (Think about that John Wayne's real first name was Marion!) So, Courtney for a boy is a good name.

Names change with the time. Jordan used to be a boy's name exclusively, now it is used mostly for girls. My son's name is Sean, and since he's been born I have met girls with this name. Just pick what you like. A boy named "Courtney" can also go by "Court" if he wants.

Sometimes, it is completely horrible. If a name is know for being either a girl or a boy's name for 99% of the time (such as Courtney), it is horrible. Boys named Lindsay, Shannon, Courtney, etc...= PUKE. However, if the name is more neutral (such as Taylor, Randy/Randi, Corrie/Corey, etc.) it's not so bad. But trust me, your child probably doesn't want to grow up being the only male Courtney he'll ever meet.

I think it depends on what the name is. Naming a girl Jordan, or naming a boy Taylor, for example, is fine. Just not something too questionable like naming a girl Thomas, or naming a boy Gabrielle. I doubt they would get assaulted in school because of a first name though. -.- To the person above me, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Calling Americans stupid just shows how shallow you are.

I am a man. My name is Ashley. I'm Australian. In America, though, Ashley is a girl's name. In Australia, Ashley is a boy's name. Most Americans who answer my questions think I'm female. They look at my pink cap, associate pink with being a girl and assume all people named Ashley are girls. Americans are dumb. If it's not American, they don't know and they don't want to know any different.

It's a cultural thing. Everyone is entitled to their own sense of taste. Who are you to judge the cultural gender role in a person's name?

I see no problem with it! In fact I know a male Courtney and Stacy. I know a couple of female Jordans and Micah. It's okay! It doesn't scar the children for life or anything!

Horrible idea! Unless you want your kid to be teased their whole adolescent life, and then hate school, and end up being a serial killer, all because the parents couldn't give them a decent name. It's not worth it!

If John "the He-Man" Wayne liked Marion so much, why do we all know him as John? Stick with the boy names, please, for your kids sake!!!!

Names are cool and important to kids. Naming a kid whatever fits them and you and the fatrer believe in is the way to go. If the kid is strong, they will survive being named Courtenay.
