TVs generate a lot of heat (that's why you need the open space around them), anything that generates heat uses lots of power. And (please don't take this the wrong way) but if it's your mother they are not likely new energy efficient ones. I don't understand the logic behind the 24/7 thing, maybe you could talk to her? Even if she shut one off that would be a start.

Find the back label if stuck to the electric cord. Don't knock the TV off. Or find the manual, look it up on the manufactures web site.
Dang, you mama/mom/mother needs a change of habit/heart. Help her wean her off the TVs!
Have her go to the zoo with you or something!
Must be bad on the eyeballs. By her a TIVO if you can afford it. She can watch later on, her favorite shows.

Like Hard Rocker said, they use MUCH less than the fridge. Many older people leave the TV's on for the noise (sounds from the porch like company is present). They do generate lots of heat, though.

Compared to say a fridge which sucks lots of power and runs all days, TV's don't use that much power.

My conventional 34" TV uses 240W according to the manual. I would think most CRT types use around that much.
