In fact as far as I can see, it says the opposite, and just asks for you to marry first...
1 Corinthians 7:8,9 Now I say to the unmarried persons and the widows, it is well for them that they remain even as I am. 9 But if they do not have self-control, let them marry, for it is better to marry than to be inflamed [with passion]
1 Timothy 4:1-3 However, the inspired utterance says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances and teachings of demons, 2 by the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, marked in their conscience as with a branding iron; 3 forbidding to marry, commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be partaken of with thanksgiving by those who have faith and accurately know the truth.

Its not biblical and should not be a mandatory requirement in certain groups but a individual choice.

Catholic priestly celibacy is not an unchangeable dogma but a disciplinary rule. Men are not forced to be priests, either, but they understand they are promising celibacy if they choose that profession.
Some religions commend celibacy as commanding your will and passions to focus on the Divine.
BIBLE:
"Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it."— Mt. 19:12
"This I say by way of concession, however, not as a command. Indeed, I wish everyone to be as I am [single or widowed], but each has a particular gift from God, one of one kind and one of another."— 1 Cor 7:6,7
"Now in regard to virgins, I have no commandment from the Lord, but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy. So this is what I think best because of the present distress: that it is a good thing for a person to remain as he is."— 1 Cor 7:25,26
"I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband."— 1 Cor 7:32-34

obviouyly such an expectation for it's clergy leads to a problem, and any group who adds to scripture runs into problems. Another example is the belief that undestanding the trinity and all it's ins and outs in order to be a "good" christian will lead to intollerances that one day cause the death of many many thousands. Adding what we think is probably true to what the Word says for sure is a mistake no matter what it is. Taking away also causes problems.
it takes a strong group to say I do not know exactly whats up here, I am satisfied not knowing when the end times are and so on. People are weak but God is strong enough to make up for that.

a misread of the bible. Some monks were making copies of copies of the bible. They changed a word accidently from celebrate to celebate.
sorry - I had to say it. I agree with you. Paul went on in 1 Corinthians 7 that it is better to be single, you can devote more to God, than if your family needs part of you.

I think you're right. I have thought about this for a while and the only people who started that were the monks. Same with masturbation. It was the monks who decided to refrain from stuff like that. Doesn't say that you shouldn't do that stuff in the Bible. Misconceptions of people.

It is a church's choice. there are religions who do not practice CELIBACY but for practical reasons it easier for a celibate to move around and do missionary works. For parochial services, I believe married priest with children would be more effective in the service to a community specially if he has run his family well.

In Romans when Paul is instructing on leaders of the Church, he says that if a man is unable to keep from fornication or fleshly desires, he should remain even as Paul was... Paul was celibate and his instruction was interpreted by the Roman Catholic Church to mean that they MUST be celibate. It's actually only one interpretive verse in the Bible, but that's how they read it.

The Catholic church originally required celibacy so priests would not be distracted from their faith by women. By denying themselves even the slightest chance of sexual intercourse, they supposedly would be less likely to even think about, thus making them more able to focus on God.

I've always wondered that too. In my church our Bishop's our married with children. The Bible promotes marriage and children and no where that I've seen does it say religious people should not partake in that.

Although i'm sure theyll agree with me, most Christian groups (and other religions for that matter), twist rules/the bible to say what they want it to say, and sometimes ignore the parts that dont. Since the Bible is interpreted in many ways, its easy to make it say what you want it to say.
