My boyfriend is an Airborne Ranger, and he says the training is insane!! They basically push you until you break, testing hunger, exhaustion, sleep deprivation and emotional stress. It's nothing really like a sniper or an assassin, because they work in teams, though he is a mean shot with a rifle, and I certainly can't sneak up on him. You can go to goarmy.com and see what the outline for the training is.

The training your talking about would be more in the Marine RECON battalion and force recon area. Rangers are trained more to deffend airports and take control of urban areas. And yes that is hollywood but theres people that are highly trained and spend numerous hours training to do that type of stuff, but its more SEAL/RECON type training. But dont get me wrong Rangers are badasses. They just dont focus much on Jungle warfare. As for the assassin part, thats only government training. The closest they come to be assassins is sniping.

No....think of the SEALS, only for the army. They're a specially trained force used for stratigic attackes or holding high risk buildings.
Black hawk down? Saw that? Those guys that first entered the building were all Rangers. They work in teams of about 20 and most commonly take buildings or hold ground until more support arrives.

No, Rangers aren't quite assassins, but they are a part of Special Ops. They are pretty much the first in last out sort of guys, and are pretty elite.
Here's an article from goarmy.com that gives a brief overview that might give you a better idea: http://www.goarmy.com/ranger/
I wouldn't trust what you see in the movies in regards to the military, it's not usually all the accurate...:-) (although sometimes pretty cool)

Yes you can be trained, if you have some aptitude beforehand. That is why so few make it through Ranger training - they had the desire, but not the talent or the will.
One of my best buds was 75th Ranger. He was so tough you'd never guess it, and he really didn't care for war movies, fiction, or guys who had to act like hard cases.
