He's just a kitten- about 7-9 weeks old. We adopted him a couple of days ago from a shelter and took him to the vet for his first check-up yesterday. He's sneezing and has gunky eyes. She said viral infections are airborne and are rampant at shelters and it should clear up on it's own. But for a kitten he seems to sleep too much. He was playful the first day we brought him home but now he's sleeping all day. He's eating okay though. Should I be worried? Could this just be him adjusting to our home?

Wow I just re-read my question. Sorry for the bad grammar. I'm really tired right now.

Kittens adjust very rapidly to new situations. I suspect that your pet is suffering from the effects of the virus. There are several types of respiratory infections and they cause the sneezing and the exudate in the eyes...you can remove that with a mild boric acid solution and a gauze pad. Check its ears as wax may also build up (not ear mites but wax) and it may make the kitten shake its head...causes a ringing in their ears. Remember too that cats spend a lot of the day sleeping and resting. Viral infections such as the human cold are self-limiting (lasting up to 14 days) and since your Vet has checked the animal, I feel you have nothing to worry about. She is right about the conditions at many shelters as absolute sanitation is a nightmare of a job. With each new arrival brings the prospects of new diseases.

He just doesn't feel well, and sleeping is a great way to conserve energy so he can better fight off the virus. His body is doing the right thing for him to get better quicker.
Let him sleep all he wants, and do your best to keep him comfortable.
Hope he feels better soon.
Good Luck.

Uh, gee... ya think?? Lessee... viral infection, feeling like crap, naaaaahh, not a chance. (Sarcasm)

Do YOU feel like running marathons when YOU have a viral infection?? Keep an eye on him and make sure he keeps eating. If he stops eating, it's time for a recheck with the vet.

Lethargy can be the sign of fever ... so watch your kitty to ensure he is eating and drinking plenty of water.

Check his gums periodically to make sure they are dark pink... if they turn light, he is dehydrated.

When in doubt, call or check with the vet.

The flu makes ME lethargic.

You seem to be an intelligent person -- your writing is coherent, your grammar, syntax and spelling is good.

Your posting is entirely cogent.

Do you really need to be told to take the cat to the vet?

C'mon! Tomorrow is not too soon.
