My gums sting for about 20 minutes usually a couple of times a day, mid-afternoon and mid-evening. The dentist said he didn't see anything wrong. That was last July. But this has been going on now for about 9 months. My wife thinks it is because I use listerine for longer than 30 seconds at a time, but I disagree because it doesn't do it during or shortly after rinsing with listerine, it is hours later. Any ideas?

My first thought was gingivitis, but then you said your dentist didn't find anything wrong. I highly doubt Listerine is the culprit for this. I've been using it for many years now and I've never experienced pains that I can associate to using it. But maybe it won't hurt to limit or maybe stop using it for a few days so you can be absolutely sure it's not the cause of stinging.

This problem may also be caused by your method of brushing. Do you brush your teeth (and gums) too hard? Maybe you can try switching to a soft bristle toothbrush and see the difference.

What have you got to lose besides the pain ? Don't use the Listerine for a few weeks and see if there is a change. If there is .. won't you be happy that you tried ? .. Good Luck ! :)
