why don't you go and get some numbing cream from the store, and after the IV is in it shouldn't heart any more. If your in pain you should ask for some pain medication that will relax you. I have had probable 25 surgery's some good medication to ask for is morphine, Demerol or versed.

Ask the nurse if you could have the IV placed on the other side of your elbow (the crease of your arm). It is Alot less painful in that location because your hands have many nerve endings which causes more pain. Most of the time this can be done upon your request but it also depends on what you are having surgery on as well. Good luck to you :)

Tell them to count to three but actually do it on one or two.

I had to have an IV put in... at first, while i was awake, they tryed and failed 6 times. Finally, they got one it, but it was a "bad job". So they decided to knock me out then redo it. Well, while I was unconsceice, they tryed about 5 more times until they got a "good one". Four people in all stuck me. When I woke up my socks were twisted, when I asked why, the nurse told me the while I was alseep they had to try in my foot. lol. I am a freak.

Well i watch because if i can see when its coming and when its done i don't have a problem. but when i don't look and i don't see it coming i jump and that makes it hurt. There are shots that numb the site of the IV but thats just another poke to deal with. So you will have to grin and bare it.

You can ask if they can gas you and when you are asleep they can put in the IV I am terrified of needles and that is what they did with me when i had to go under a couple of times.

make sure they apply heat to the iv site & if possible drink plenty of water. both of these things will make it easier for them to hit the vein the first time. also make sure the nurse who is administering the iv is good at what she does. if he/she looks at all uncomfortable, it is your right to ask for someone with a little more experience. yes, it is your right to do this. you are paying them to make you well, not uncomfortable. i know my pain from iv's usually come from inexperience, or bad veins. good luck!!!

Just don't pay attention. When I get blood drawn from my arm or get an IV I just look away and then the needle is randomly in and I'm like "WTF?" and it's done.
