Go to Land's End. com and you can buy some of the things you may need. They have quality items that keep you warm. Definitely get a pair of long johns for really cold winters. Long Johns are undergarments that you can wear that look like leggings and they also have shirts as well. Other items that are essential are cashmere scarves, leather gloves, goose-down jacket (for really cold weather). And also remember to keep your head and toes warm with a hat and good boots, very important. In addition to that, if you are relocating w/ your vehicle, salt sprinkled in the driveway is used to melt snow, but use in moderation because it will also rust your mode of transportation if it is made of steel.

Get a good pair of boots, and a warm jacket. Dress in layers. And think WARM! I think you're going to find New York is so exciting that the cold and snow will be novelty and part of the excitement of the city.
Good luck!

Yeah, go to Florida!! LOL!!! =)
No, seriously, if they forcast snow, make sure you have enough food staples to get you thru a day or two - don't go out if you don't have to then. (People tend to act like the world is coming to an end if there's snow in the forcast. Don't freak. Even with a Nor'Easter, everything is cleared in 2 days or so.)
Also, dress in layers. Invest in waterproof boots. Once your feet get cold, you're cold for a long time.

*Thermal silk-knit long underwear are a good thing. (You can get them with cute tops, like tank tops.) So are thermal silk-knit undersocks.
* Gloves are highly important. So are warm scarves.
* There are those Ugg boots, which I guess might be getting less fashionable than they were, but they are just the thing when there's snow up to your ankles.
* Layers -- such as -- silk-knit undershirt, silk-knit leggings, silk-knit undersocks; jeans, socks, warm boots; thin cashmere sweater, thick cable-knit cardigan sweater, windproof jacket with thermal lining, knit scarf, gloves.

You need to buy thermals and wear wool pull over sweaters. A good warm hat to cover your ears or you will receive frostbite. Not every day is like this though.
