The Maltese is a lively, playful, gentle, loving, trusted and devoted dog. They are very good at learning tricks if they are rewarded.
They are generally good with other animals.
They love playing outside and walking through puddles so whenever they are out in puddles, they need a bath after.
They can be snappish and inconsiderate to children.
The Maltese can be hard to housetrain.
They are prone to sunburn, respiratory, eye and tooth problems. They are picky eaters and can be difficult to feed. They can get chills and experience discomfort during summer or hot weather.
They enjoy regular walks and enjoy these walks until they are well into old age.
You must keep this dog away from damp areas.
Daily combing and brushing is VERY important for the long hair on the Maltese. You should clean the eyes daily to prevent staining and clean the 'beard' after meals or drinking for the same reason. You have to bathe and shampoo the dog often and make sure the dog is dried thoroughly. Clean the ears and pull out hair growing inside the ear canal.
If you are not the person that likes grooming their dog everyday, you can get it's fur clipped to make it easier.
The Maltese sheds little to no hair and so is good for allergy sufferes.

Here is a website you may want to look at.

I love these little dogs, mine was quite easy to housetrain.
they are intelligent and brave (for their size)
loving and yes, quite messy and hard to groom if you leave their coats long. you dont of course need to have the long flowing coat, but it is beautiful to look at. Their poop sometimes sticks to the fine hairs of their coats because they do not have undercoats. as for keeping their coats white, most of any discoloration will be under the eyes next to the muzzel and around their mouths from the food they eat, you can dust these areas with flour to cover up the stains but why should you, i think it adds character to their look.
Oh yea, they bark alot if they hear other dogs barking. If you get a puppy from a breeder, make sure it doesnt hear any other dogs barking and they will not learn to bark much, mostly growl

I own 4 Maltese and find them very easy to maintain if coat is groomed short, leaving the long hair on face only. They are very adaptable to children and other pets and very intelligent pets, and is a non-shedding breed. They make ideal house pets, and aren't pronged to allergies.
