Exactly how long will I have these toothaches after getting braces? And are you still able to chew surgar free gum at least after getting braces? Plus, is it true that eating popcorn with braces is the biggest pain in the neck?

I feel your pain, I've got braces right now. Just got them a few months ago. The only pain is when they tighten the wires, other than that it's really not that bad. I chew gum and I am just really careful not to get it all caught in the wires. I try to stay away from popcorn because it takes forever to get all the little pieces out of there. Lettuce, whether its on a sandwich or in a salad, can be a pain too. Avoid chewy candy like starburts or milk duds. They can get really caught in there. Plus you arent really supposed to eat that stuff either. I have found taking advil right before I go in to have my braces adjusted really helps and also taking it regularly for the first couple of days. You will get used to them really fast. I am not going to lie, the first couple weeks are the hardest and you can feel miserable at times but it goes away fast. The only thing you will never get over is what a pain it is to floss.

The worst toothache is when you first get the braces. But, every time you get new bands and wires, the aching will go on for a day, then quit. Sugar free gum is the best idea. I know it sounds dumb, but Freedent won't stick. No food is a big deal. Just don't stuff your mouth.

It only hurts the first couple days of getting your wires tightened, and that's probably at most. Usually the pain goes away within hours. Don't eat Starburts or Skittles though. Gum is fine. I think I had some of my brace things fall off when I was younger due to chewing real sticky candies.

Unfortunately, every time you go to the orthodontist to get your braces tightned your teeth will ache. (take some motrin and put a heating pad on your face) I know its tough but it will be worth the discomfort. Isn't it grand they don't tell you this when you go to get them on. The aching is your teeth shifting. I had braces and they would ache for at least 8-12 hours after getting them tightned. Hang in there and don't eat popcorn it will get inbetween them and can cause permanent stains. Chew sugar free gum moderately, I did and had no problems. Hang in there.

Hey i got braces last year an i kno your pain... literaly! It's going to hurt everytime you get the braces adjusted which is around every 2-3 weeks, but you get used to it! Yeh you can still chew sugarfree gum and eat as much pop corn as you want but don't try to eat (whole) apples, especially in public, it's impossible!
