"side effects" may be caused by bodies reaction to hoodia OR may be caused by changes in the diet or exercise levels. Many people get headaches or irritability when using hoodia because it makes them come off the empty sugars and carbs. This in turn gives SHORT term withdrawal pains just like a drug addict, alcoholic, or smoker feels when they quit cocaine, alcohol, or cigarettes.

There do not appear to be any serious or harmful side effects of Hoodia Gordonii that have been reported. Its presence in the African food chain for many years provides a precedent of its safety. However, it should not be abused (as with anything really)

Pills are never recommended. They do one or more of the following: Make you poop more, make you hyper (caffeine effect), suppress appetite (Slimfast).
Hoodia seems to be in the "make you hyper" catagory. You will probably experience the same effects as if you took lots of caffine (pills, coffee, Jolt, 'Dew, etc).
If the pills do help you take off pounds, you won't have a healthy lifestyle in place. Your body will be primed for weight gain after the rapid loss. When you stop the pills, the weight will come back WITH A VENGENCE.
And all that is before any health risks from the side effects.
