I think of it more as a demotivator.

Fear cuts through our doubts and inhibitions. Whether we are trying to measure our courage before we go out on stage, or someone is holding a gun to our head, fear is an intense emotion that makes us suddenly forget our comfort zone.

Fear is only the second-best motivator though. The first is inspiration. ;) As a leader, you have a choice of being a tyrant, or a great motivator. There have been many tyrants throughout history, but many fewer have been able to bring out the best in people.

Fear is a very effective motivator when running from a gator.
Fear is a very inefficient motivator when used (by "person A") to get ("person B") to do what "person A" wants. The bully will be focused more on what they believe to be an important output from the person in fear; or more focused on what they want for themselves. This will produce a shortcoming of a possible good livelihood versus letting all decide what natural / positive impetus will drive them.

"...one teacher allowed a girl to fall from the flying rings because he did not dare catch her."
THIS is what happens when fear is used to make value judgements - it becomes unaware of reality - a twisting of the proper value of other people.

Behaviorally speaking, if it works, it's a good motivator. In my extensive experience, it only works until the fear instiller is gone. There are much better motivators but motivation is individual to a great extent. What motivates one person may not motivate another.

In a sense, yes. If a semi-truck is going to hit me, I'm going to get out of the way! However, I don't think fear should ever more than momentary. You choose how to react and deal with the consequences. As this relates to religion, I would not immediately dismiss images of sacrifice, punishment, and even hell just because they seem threatening, but rather carefully choose an intelligent response. I, however, would not let myself fall under the influence of a belief system that emphasized a consistent attitude of fear (the hammer is always about to fall).

It will do in a pinch but love is a stronger motivator. The strongest is fear of losing love.

it depends on the motivation. fear will always lead to hatred....it can motivate someone to kill that which they fear. now respect, thats a different story. if you respect and love someone enough, you can be motivated to kill or die for them

No. What happens when you encounter a person who's not scared of what you're using as a motivator?
