There are 4 large piles of horse crap in the road outside my house. Not only does it stink but there are flies buzzing round it and no doubt some motorcyclist will come down the road and skid off his bike because of it.

There are laws for dog owners who I believe can be fined £1000 for leaving dog mess in the road. I believe this should also be the case for horse owners. Anyone agree?

Horse shite is made up entirely of organic green matter which dissipates in water, unlike dog shite which is toxic due to the meat content.
Hose it and it will disappear, or just wait until it rains.
stop being such a stuck up townie.

where do you live that the horses like that spot so much?
i doubt any motorcyclist who is paying any attention to the road will not see the piles of horse dung if they are as prominent as you claim.
riders don't always know when their horses have crapped because any well trained horse will just keep walking while it does its buisness; seriously, horses can do that while jumping, let alone walking.
it would be an enormous amount of effort to get off your horse every time that happened, pick it up, remount in the road (where there could be cars), and carry the crap with you.
privately owned horses are seldom in the streets of cities. in the countryside there are plenty of riders, and any horse crap ends up fertilizing the grass at the side of the road, or enbedded in the trail. in cities the only riders you get on streets are police officers who have more important things to do.
plus there are a lot more dogs walking around, can you imagine what it would be like if no one picked up their dog's crap?

Definetely Disagree.
The horses at my stables require(at the least) a tall 3 step mounting block to get onto. How the heck do you expect someone to get off their horse(when often the don't realize that the horse has "gone" since many horses continue walking), bring a muck bucket, a pitchfork, and a mounting block with them so they can clean it up? I don't get it.
If a motorcyclist DOES skid off his bike, it's their own fault for not watching where they're going/getting hurt if they AREN'T WEARING PROPER CLOTHING(Helmet, long sleeves, gloves, boots, long pants...)
One last point...
Which is worse for the atmosphere and people's health-a spot of manure or stinky smog from cars?

Totally agree. It's so annoying when trying to walk down a foot path that's covered in horse poop. Horse riders are so up there own back ends and should just stick to fields and keep the annoying beasts off the roads and paths. In some countries horses wear a bag over the offending area to catch any mess they do. So horse riders get off your high horse and come down to earth were the rest of us live.

I think this situation would drive me mad.
Unfortunately little is done about horse poo for the following reasons:
Horse poo is not as toxic as dog poo as they are herbivores and dogs are carnivores and therefore they process their food in different ways. Horse poo does not carry the parasites that dogs carry which means that while Dog poo on the road is a real health hazard to humans, horse poo is not regarded as seriously. That is why horse poo can be used as a fertiliser for plants to be consumed by humans but dog poo would render them unfit for consumption. Horse poo will 'safely' decompose. Finally, dogs can be trained to defecate in certain places so there is no excuse for owners to allow their dogs to mess public areas. If their dog does do so they should clean it up. In contrast, even professional Horse trainers can't train horses to reliably control when they defecate and as long as they have a right to ride on public highways - horses will leave their trail behind them. It would be regarded a health and safety hazard for a rider to dismount a horse on a road and clear up horse poo. They would also have diminished control of their horse when they remount with the bag of poo!
Unfortunately many horse owners who stable their horses only get them out for exercise when they take them for a ride and the movement stimulates their digestive system. This means they are prone to off load while out for a ride!!
Its time to let the riders know how infuriating their horses mess is and ask them to adjust their route for at least some of the year to by pass your house.
Station yourself out side the house and talk to them when you are in a calm and collected mood!

Horse crap is grassy and not seriously dangerous to humans. Dog crap is mostly putrid protein residues, made even fouler by stink gland secretions, and full of pathogens that do affect us. I live in the country, where horses, cows and dogs all foul the lanes, but it is only the dog crap that is a problem.

I agree. Though I don't live where this would happen. I thought that there were some sort of bags that horses aould wear if they are in a public place where it is not proper to do their business. I could see if the horse was on a trail and did their thing but not on public ways. Good luck to you.

it is illegal for a dog owner to let its dog poo in the path, or on someones garden, however it is NOT ILLEGAL to let your dog poo in the ROAD. we were told this by the RSPCA and police. this is because if a horse poos in the road they arnt expected to get off the horse and pick all the poo up. this is the same for a dog owner.

Get real! Do you expect us to ride around with a shovel and bin liner strapped to our backs?!

Horse manure is 100% organic material - grass, hay, oats, etc. It does not smell as foul as dog/cat poo, which is made up of undigested meat. Also dogs and cats carry bacteria in their guts which can be harmful to children, pregnant women etc: you don't have that problem with horses.

If you think it's bad having a couple of piles of poo near your house, you should try living in Newmarket - we have up to 2,000 racehorses in training using the streets every single day - that's a lot of poo!

Too right but I don't think the Council's could provide a big enough "horsey" bin, do you ?!

Also imagine the size of the poop-a-scoop bags they would need !!

It is disgusting though and they should be made to clear it up as it's not nice to have to walk past or drive through. It makes a mess and stays for so long as there's so much of it but I just don't think there's any practical solution ..................................
