Ft Sam Houston (headquarters, 5th Army) just happens to be located in the heart of the most vibrant, diverse, and friendliest city in the nation -- San Antonio, Texas. Here, you'll enjoy unbelievable support for military personnel (besides the Army post, there are 2 Air Force bases, and 2 more joint Air Force/city complexes). Plus, we celebrate at the drop of a hat. Fiesta (a 2 week long citywide party) is unequalled anywhere in the US; it makes Mardi Gras look like a frat party. Fantastic food - Mexican (you'll learn here that Mexican food does NOT mean Taco Bell), barbecue (it may have been invented elsewhere, but Texans perfected it), German (a deli, several family owned restaurants, and a genuine, authentic beer garden), fresh seafood (the Gulf coast is only 2 hours away), and just about anything else you can think of. And I mean it - the friendliest people on the planet, especially to military folks. Finally, the Riverwalk, which at Christmastime is drenched with hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights hanging from the tall cypress trees lining the river - an indescribably beautiful sight.

Come visit, and you won't want to leave.

I live on base at Ft. Campbell and the housing here really does suck. My hubby is in the military and since he has been gone to Iraq housing doesn't care about anything until he gets home. I'm not a "spoiled brat wife" either because before he left he told me to enroll to college or get a job and I did as he said so I am doing something other than blowing money.

Just about any Army Post in the US has attractions in the surrounding area -- it all depends on what you are interested in for outdoor activities.

Quarters for Single Soldiers have changed a lot in recent years -- they are being modernized, and they are really starting to look better than most college dorm rooms -- and have more space and are much nicer too.

I, a Female Retired Service Member (Long Time Single while in the Service -- short horrid marriage, then Single Parent while on Active Duty) know the experience personally with Dependent Wives -- some of my experiences were good, and some were awful (and I have some really bad stories of the worst ones -- and YES, they did act like alcoholic spoiled brats who could not do anything on their own and treated the Female Service Member like a piece of dirt under their feet -- but I digress) -- I did meet many Good Dependent Wives too -- ones who respected the Female Service member and treated her with the RESPECT she Deserved!

Keep in mind that you serve the NEEDS of the Army, and NOT the other way around. Yes, you CAN request specific duty stations, and the Army will try to match you with your desires, but in reality, if your MOS is needed at Base X and you want Base Y, then it is to Base X you will be ordered.

YOU will make your On-Post Experience in Quarters as good or bad depending on your attitude and willingness to explore and treat this as a Life Experience -- one that will benefit you for the rest of your life, an opportunity to learn new things, meet new people and see new places ...

OR ... you can make yourself miserable by concentrating on NEGATIVES and NOT be willing to explore and participate in the MANY activities open to ALL Servicemembers on and off post in the area.

Try not to go to Ft. Sill. Its mostly guys and its a combination of Marines and Army Artillery. Theres nothing to do within an hours drive and the newest barracks I saw were built in 1965.

Ft. Sill is featured in Pauley Shore's movie "In The Army Now". It goes from 90 degrees to -40 overnight and we had 2 tornadoes while I was there.

Oh and the food sucks =)

What? So you are intending to move to a new city just so you can snag a man in uniform? Both of these installations you mentioned in your title, Bragg and Hood are in two different states and regions. Have you considered the cost of moving and job hunt all in the search for the man in uniform? Oh my goodness. I find it odd that you are not searching for a husband based on qualities or character, but you want the uniform primarily. Be careful, you might set yourself up for disappointment. You know the men are going to sense your objectives. I am still shaking my head in disbelief here. Why are you dropping your fathers rank? No one here cares about your dads retired rank. Your immature edit shows why you have had two previous divorces. You are an adult dropping your fathers rank. You are this old and are chasing men and acting like this? Grow up.

not all barracks are crappy, they are renovating barracks on our base right now and i know other bases have already been completed. we were stationed at fort lewis and they were some of the nicest barracks i've seen. military wives have a right to be bitchy about housing. we have to live in rundown, poorly maintained homes and still pay money out of our check for it. some of the housing offices are being run irresponsibly due to the new privatization.

Look into Fort Lewis if you like to do outdoor activities, Seattle is also very nearby. You can get there in about 45 minutes. We lived there for 3 years and never ran out of things to do. They have very nice barracks too. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Please keep in mind, being in the military is not like booking a vacation... you go where Uncle Sam wants to assign you. While you do get your dream sheet, rarely will you be stationed where it will be most convenient to you. Your MOS and the needs of the military will dictate where you will be stationed. While many bases have appealing aspects to them, virtually all duty stations (socially) are considered the pits. All duty stations have pluses and minuses, most bases are not conveniently located to major cities... most are in the boonies or have base towns that are not exactly friendly to military personnel.
