No matter what you hear, marijuana will not cause long-term memory loss if you use it occasionally. While it is still in your system you will have trouble with short-term memory but within 12 hours or less your memory will be back to normal. I am not sure what effect it would have if it was used on a frequent basis.
It will not damage your lungs anymore than smoking a cigarette would (which is minimal). Plus, it is not carcinogenic like cigarettes.
It is also not addictive. It doesn't affect your dopamine receptors like hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine do so you will not physically become dependent on it.
Here's a website that is against the use of marijuana; however, all the information there is based on what happens WHILE you are high. It says nothing about the after effects.
http://www.studyworld.com/basementpapers/sec_papers/Marijuana_Effects.html
In my personal experience, there are NO bad after effects that I, or any of my friends have had. My memory works the same as it did before and, contrary to what people who have answered will have you believe, I am NOT a drug addict because I smoke once in a blue moon.
In the end, it is YOUR decision, not mine or your friends, or even the people on Yahoo. All you have to do is be safe about it. Make sure it is not laced with anything, smoke somewhere secluded so you don't get caught, DO NOT drive high, and make sure you have water with you because you WILL get thirsty. Most of all, don't drink and smoke. It's not a good combination.
Be safe and have fun!

There's still a lot of "Reefer Madness" out there. Nowadays the DARE program does a great job of convincing kids that pot will kill you, or at the very least turn you into a lazy and unproductive citizen. I am constantly amazed at the folks who believe all this negative hype about the drug without having any real experience or knowledge. It's similar to our government trying to convince us of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to justify a war. It's the war on drugs, instead. I grew up with the original reefer madness campaign in full force, but I was also the type of person to look at the other side, and what I saw was a lot of people smoking weed who did not seem to have any of the issues the propaganda would have had you believe. It was for this reason that I decided to try it and see for myself. I remember the rush of anticipation and excitement the first time - the thrill of doing something so taboo - and the disappointment that nothing happened!! Persistance paid off the third try and I've been a smoker ever since. What I see as the basic problem of such propaganda about marijuana is that if you experiment and find out for yourself that pot is not going to make you do all these awful things, then you may think maybe it's the same for crack, or crank, or even heroin. If what my government tells me about pot is not true - what else are they lying about? I believeTHIS is the main reason pot is considered a "gateway drug." Finding out the lies you've been told leads to a belief that nothing else you've heard about drugs is true. Unfortunately, when it comes to harder drugs, the truth is often worse than the propaganda. That said, smoking pot for the first time won't kill you or harm you in any way. It may not even get you high until you've tried it a couple or three times. If you've never smoked, it may even be difficult for you to inhale enough the first few times without coughing. There can be a bit of a learning curve to getting stoned! Once you do get high, one of two things will happen. You'll either like it, or not. If you like it, you'll be tempted to do it again. NOT because it's addicting, but simply because you like it. In using any drug, or alcohol for that matter, there is a certain amount of self control required. Knowing when it's appropriate to use or not use a drug is a part of keeping yourself safe. Smoking and driving is not an appropriate use. Smoking before class is also inappropriate. The fact that it is illegal adds another dimension to using. If you're stupid about it, you will get caught. Getting caught is not cool at all. It's harder to get away with it now that drug dogs in schools and random pee tests on the job are the routine. It sounds like you've given a lot of thought to making your decision, and have even talked to your parents about it. If you do decide to try it, stay safe about it. Use your common sense and find and know your personal limits. It is possible to be a responsible stoner, just as it is possible to drink responsibly. Good luck - and - btw - go for the widow - leave the schwag alone!

Weed, especially schwag, won't effect you much. You'll get a little high, but not a really "good" high. It won't make your grades drop or anything, I know a guy who smokes just about every day and he has a gpa above 3.0 so it won't hurt you that way. One time won't damage your lungs. If you're smoking from a bowl, from my personal experience, be careful where you put it on your lip. I burnt my lip the first time and got a little blister. Smoking and passing a bowl around won't show up on a drug test, trust me. Even if you smoke 3 or 4 bowls. One joint by yourself will. Smoking isn't a really bad thing, and it's not physically addictive, so there's nothing you'll really be losing. It's really up to you if you do or not, I'm just trying to give you some facts. Don't listen to people who have never smoked before, because they have no experience to go by. I've only smoked a few times and not for about 2-3 months. It is possible to say no once you've started, especially with weed, because it's one of the tamest drugs out there.

dear sweet 16,
This is the age that I started experimenting. I can't remember if I said it was going to be just one time or not. But it DID turn into a habit. A big terrible one that almost destroyed my life. I am now a recovering addict and alcholic. Even the first time it will effect your health. With each in-hale you WILL burn brain cells that cannot grow back. I swear there are memories and stuff that I once knew are gone forever. I honestly cannot remember much about high school at all and those are suppose to be the best years of your life. Please take my advice. Just say no thanks. If your friends can't respect that then they truelly are not your friends.

I was 14 when I the same thing happened to me. I did it that one time, and then again at 15, and then again at 17...so I guess that one time turned into three times. I'm 22 now, and don't have the desire to do it. That said, at the time I was rebelling so my grades weren't that great to begin with (I'm finishing my psych degree right now, so obviously it didn't impact too much). My experience with it was that because it was my first time and the other times were so far apart that I didn't really get an affect from it other than bloodshot eyes. I guess if it does something for you, it's very likely that you will do it again. Use your best judgement...do it or don't do it for yourself, and not your friends. Try drinking first...you'll get an affect and it's not illegal....just remember moderation!

Well, I am in my 30's and have never smoked weed, and have never had a hankering to.
Your problem here is that these are your friends, and they are into it, and once you say "yes" once, you won't be able to keep your friends, and continue to say "no" later. Since I am nearly twice your age, I hope you will just trust me on that. They will bother you again and again and again, and soon enough, once turns to twice turns to thrice, and then there goes your life...full of hope to just another burnt out druggie with no future.
That said, one little drag probably won't hurt you. Heck, our great president snorted coke...
If you decide to do this, make sure you are willing to pay the consequences such as juvenile court, parents never trusting you again, perhaps jail (since you are 16 - and if things get out of hand). Oh, yeah, due to all that, your grades probably will drop a little.

Haha. It will damage your lungs and your brain. Deficits with memory have been associated with marijuana use. And of course, smoking is smoking, so, it affects your lungs. The effects are gradual to manifest, but this does not mean it has no effect at all with one use. Trying it once will definitely wear on your resolve not to do it anymore.
You are your own person. They can be your friends without you doing drugs. Be firm. Have a nice day. Haha.

nothings going to happen dont worry, but you wont get high the first time.... It's only bad if you start smoking like everyday. Your grades will not drop because you smoked once haha or twice or 3 times........
Just don't be stupid and smoke somewhere where you can get caught and start wasting your money on it. And dont smoke out of a dollar bill! I saw a kid do that the other day while i was visiting my old high school... people are retarded.

It's lame, and if they were really your friends, they wouldn't pressure you into doing it. Some of my good friends in high school used to smoke, but they NEVER put any pressure on me to smoke myself.
Secondly, though you might trust them, unless they're actually growing the weed themselves in their houses, there could be ANYTHING in it. Just because the stuff they've bought from someone before has been okay, doesn't mean that in the future it wont be laced with PCP, cocaine, heroin, rat poison, etc. Bottom line-it's SO not worth it.
