Whether it is sprained or not, a general practitioner would be able to tell more than likely, due to your ability or inability to move it, amount and type of swelling, any discoloration, sensation with movement, etc. and may even perform an xray. Besides, most ins. companies won't compensate you for seeing an orthopedic doctor without a referral and the ortho may be insulted if you go in without one and act as though you are trying to diagnose yourself by bypassing your regular md. Id go to my family doctor. He can tell you what to do to relieve symptoms, such as applying ice or heat and for how long, how frequently, prescribe anti-inflammatory or pain meds if needed, etc. Hope everything works out ok. Good luck.

Usually you don't need a doc for an ankle. Usually ice in the first 24 hours, followed by heat, is what you need. Use crutches and it will heal much quicker. If you have to be on it, have a sports trainer tape it so it's immobile.

None. If it's a recent sprain, heat it, then cool it, then heat it, then cool it every 15 minutes for 3 or 4 cycles. If it's an old injury, just put ice on it and elevate.
