Similar to the other post, my cat likes to drink from the toilet (or a running tap). We can't put the toilet seat down because he's trained to use the toilet as his litter. We're trying to wean him off the running tap as we've bought him a new drinking fountain, which he's shown no interest in. Also, he can't drink from an outside bowl, as he's an indoor cat. Is there anything that we can add to the toilet water that will dissuade him from drinking it - something that won't harm him should he decide that he wants to give it a try?

Don't add anything to the toilet water, the best way to get him away from drinking out of the toilet is to make the new drinking fountain more interesting for him. Cats that like running or dripping water can often be steered away from the 'bowl' with one of those home water fountains......the ones that run with a small motor, that are supposed to relax you. It works but changing any animals' habit takes patience on your part and may require the bathroom door to be closed for a while or maybe just put the fountain in there, and gradually move it out. Good luck!

I have a similar problem and also wasted money on one of those fountains. Our four year old cat sits in the bath and waits for someone to turn the tap on, but to my horror the kitten (12 weeks) just started drinking from the toilets. If I could train my husband and sons to close the lid there wouldn't be a problem. I curious as to how you trained your cat to potty in the toilet. Maybe I'll have to post that question. The only thing I can think of is white vinegar. It's not expensive, and I don't think a cat would find it tasty, yet it shouldn't be harmful.

Just about every cat I have had has done this. The only way really is to keep the seat down and the door closed. We found our cats prefer a beaker to a bowl. They also seem to like the water feeders, where the water runs from a container into a bowl as the cat drinks.

I typically just leave an ordinary cup of water out though my cats will drink from a puddle of dirty water if I don't watch them. If the toilet is available the cat will probably drink out of it so the only way to break him of it would involve teaching him to use a litter box as well.

Perhaps you could mix a lot of salt into the toilet water. It wouldn't hurt the cat to drink it because after one lap it would probably stop. That would at least discourage it, and then maybe it would stop altogether.

Boy - that is a tough question.

The only thing I can think of is that you clean your toilets too well - that it no longer smells like cat box to him, or he wouldn't drink out of it. Try letting it get a little funky (It shouldn't hurt him if he drinks from it) and see if he gets the idea that he shouldn't drink there ...

Cats have a natural instinct to drink water that is flowing.

That is why they like to dring from running faucets, fish tanks, etc.

Does the drinking foutain supply constant clean flowing water?

Below is link to a good one.

I don't know how old he is, maybe he is set in his ways. Do you keep a bowl of cold water next to his feeing bowl? This my help quence his thirst.

I can't think of anything that you can constantly keep in your toilet bowl that wouldn't be harmful.

Good luck to you.

well.. there is this detergent for toilet bowl that comes in a cake form, its meant to clean the toliet when flush, it is blue in color and has a detergent smell to it. Perhaps if you do that, he may see the "funny" water and stay away?

Good luck..
