Go see a Broadway show!!! You are going to be RIGHT in times square!! Go to the TKTS booth if you don't want to get tickets in advance, and get half price tickets to whatever shows are available. Go to Macy's on 34th st! It's the World's Largest Store. Visit the Metropolitan Museum. Visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens - it's springtime and all the flowers are blooming! It's an amazing experience, really! Food: Go to the Heartland Brewery near the Empire State Building and have a home made root beer. It's amazingly delicious! Go visit Chinatown and eat at Wohops, which is my uncle's absolute favorite Chinese restaurant EVER that he insists on going to whenever he visits us. It really is very tasty and cheap too! Any other recommendations I have would depend on what you are into- food? theater? shopping? history? off the beaten path stuff? But seriously... go see a Broadway show!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT GO TO EAT IN TIMES SQUARE
Try some local places
Lil Frankies on 1st and 1st It's Italian and it rules
Mamouns Falafel on Macdougal St : this a stand up falafel joint that is open until the wee hours of the morning
Madras Mahal is on Lexington near 27th: great Indian food
Tortilla Flats on Washington ST : a funky mexican place that loves ernest borgnine
Home is a great little restaurant on Cornelia
there are so many good restaurants in the city it really depends on what kind of food you want. my one tip: if you want to eat at a big name chef's restaurant and you can't get a reservation ask if they have seating in the bar area. I ate at Babbo and Gramercy Tavern this way. Usuall they have pretty much the same menu.
Enjoy!

Little Italy is full of tourists, as is Times Square
I would recomend -- Euskadi -- Basque/Spainish W 4th East Village
Arturo's -- Pizza/Italian Houston St. Near Laguardia Place (NYU)
Blue Smoke -- Barbeque -- East 27th between Park an LEx.
I Trulli Expensive Italian same block as Blue Smoke
Gramercy Tavern Upscale American/Continental -- East 20's off Park Ave. South -- this is a good area for restaurants .

If you like italian go to Little Italy. There are dozens of italian restaurants there covering a few blocks. The menus are posted outside of each one, so find a restaurant that has what you want, has the right price and looks suitable and go in. Don't hesitate to request a particular table as they are competitive and know you can walk next door if you don't get what you want! I also like Sardi's near the theatres, a fancy restaurant that has caricatures of hundreds of famous people and decent steaks.
