It depends on when you want them to mature. I plant mine on June 10 and they are ready my mid-September. If I plant any earlier, they get ripe in August and are rotten by Halloween. They like full sun and lots of compost.

Thanks to the guy who plants his in June. You've answered a question I was wondering about today. It's spring here in NZ and our seasons are 6 months out of phase with the northern hemisphere. I'll wait until December to plant pumpkin and squash.
