Why is an alarm classed as 'going off' when really it's 'going on' ?

Well you know how like when you launch a rocket or fly a plane, you "take off". Kinda the same in a clock some kind of trigger in the clock flips,and sets it "off". so it doesn't really turn on,it....takes off,,lol I dunno how to explain it. Of course everything is getting so technical now days,,who knows if there is even a little trigger in them anymore..................I guess their isn't cause they do have digital clocks,,,,,,OH GREAT now I'M stuck on it......

well may be it making u jumping off your bed.or taking off your mood thinking of the hectic day ahead , switching off your angelic sleep ,?& i agree with the answer just above this one also.u looked at this question may be u found it quite interesting ?
