As a typical American family, I would be interested to see what you serve at dinner on a regular basis. What has been on your table regularly for the past years? When I think about it, I realize that I have been serving the same dishes for years.....Am I the only one?

No. you are not the only one and I have lived overseas and the same is true all over the world. You cook what you like, are good at and what you and your family/guests like. It's not unusual at all. My Grandmothers', my Mom, me and my Daughter all prepare dishes that have been handed down through the generations interspersed with variations, additions of experiments and the like. Why would you serve something to someone you care for that you couldn't prepare well and take pride in? It's nice to learn new recipes but I think many of us rely on the "standards".

My father in law lived with us for 11 years, and he wouldn't eat anything except meat and potatoes or junk food. No rice, no vegetables, and nothing even remotely healthy. I got into the rut of fixing meat loaf, pot roast, hamburgers, and occasionally lasagna or spaghetti (when I didn't care if he griped or not.)

Now that he's gone, I feel like I've been let out of culinary purgatory. I fix vegetarian meals, stir fries, salads, and all sort of old favorites like rice pudding or wild rice casserole. My husband and friends tell me that I'm a pretty good cook, and it's nice to be able to fix healthy, delicious food without having to listen to one person in the household complain all the time.

I even bought a Magic Bullet blender the other day and am having all sorts of fun fixing homemade soups and smoothies. I'm learning to enjoy cooking again!

You bet. as the male chef in the family i wonder how i ever got into this rut. we need something new. Men are basicly "meat and potatoes" guys, but its gets tiresome for me. I pretty much insist on meat with every meal (didn't have that option as a kid) and have everything concieveable in the freezer (mostly home grown). Still it gets tiresome and my wife wonders why i have to make taco's or buy "box" things after awhile. I'm sure all my cooking comes from my mother as her cooking came from hers.

Yes. It didn't bother me until I got married. I just ate sandwiches most all the time. Now I rotate with spaghetti, pork chops, meatloaf, hamburger steak, minute steak, and chicken.
