It could also be a swelling in the parotid gland located just in front of the ear.
The parotid gland is shaped like an upside-down triangle and lies in front and below the opening to the ear canal. In front of the gland is the posterior (back) surface of the jawbone and the masseter muscle (the muscle felt on the side of the jaw when the teeth are clenched). The deep surface of the gland lies alongside the back of the throat, near the tonsils. Normally, the parotid gland cannot be felt.

It could be a number of things.
An infected or impacted tooth.
A lymph node.
An infected saliva gland.
Tonsilitis
Swollen glands.
Ear infection
See a doctor. He will probably put you on an antibiotic. Meanwhile you could take some motrin for the pain and swelling and put warm compresses on the area often.

It could be an impacted or infected tooth. Have you been to the dentist lately? It could also have something to do with sinuse's. Perhaps you have a sinus infection. Theres also something called temporal mandibular joint, where basically the jaw joint is really stiff and painful, so it could be something to do with the jaw joint. Or as you said, perhaps an ear infection.

it is interesting, you want to see a doctor at a time when it swells up, lymph node would be the most likely cause, parotid swells up once in a life time (if you had to have mumps), lastly stone in ducts of your oral glands is less common, good luck
