This topic came up once on a message board I used to frequent. I thought it was interesting, and I thought I'd bring it up here to see what people think.

It about the idea that everything was created for us. Someone said that he felt that it was extremely arrogant to think that everything was created for us, given that the entire universe (as far as we know) stretches out for billions of light years (that was the gist of the topic), rendering us highly insignificant. And for those who may not know, a light year is the distance traveled by light in one year. So, in order to get to a galaxy that is a billion light years away, a beam of light would have to travel for a billion years.

Anyway, do you agree with this premise---that it is arrogant to say that all was created for our benefit? I was raised to believe this, but I have to admit, I can see the point in this. I mean, what would be the point of creating it all for us--especially things that are billions of light years away.

A pantheistic view (i.e., that God is all there is, and there is nothing else) such as I have sees no conflict in this question. Yes, it was created for "our" benefit, because we are all part of the One.

Everything was created for our use.
Or for that mater for our abuse.

Everything from the lowly fly, who's maggots can clean out a wound, to oil which we get everything from gas to plastic.

From the grape, to wine, from grain to whiskey.
To aid digestion, to getting drunk.

The wise use what they need, the foolish abuse what they can get!

Yes, I agree that it's arrogant. Seems to fit under the sin of pride too for those Christian people out there.

Try it the other way round, just for fun. You created all of it and see what that does to your mind.
