So many questions! Most excellent.
People become priests and nuns for various reasons, just like people become car salesmen or neurosurgeons. Many have a moment of "clarity" where life suddenly moves from the opaque to the transparent. There seems to be only one choice that define life for us.
Faith - a drug? No, my friend. Faith is a struggle, a demand, a daunting challenge, a hope, a commitment.
Faith - have it and your life will never be the same. Have it and you will finally have life.

They become priests and/or nuns because they believe that they are meant to.

They have a great love for Christ Our Lord, & desire nothing more than to bring people to love Him too. That is why they choose to dedicate their lives to Him, by becoming priests and/or nuns.

I believe that most who do, feel called or led to. They want to serve God and lead a life of devotion to Him. Of course, such vocations might also attract people with other motives, such as the need for prestige or whatever. But I think that we must not judge them, and give them the benefit of the doubt, that they are really trying to live a life of service.
