That's a very good question and one which science is struggling to answer. You should read Stephen Hawkin's "A History of the Universe."

Both are hard to imagine. for example, can you picture the universe as an eternal game of matter? although you could simply say "yes" if you think a bit deeper (just a bit, there's no need to b a philosopher) you'll see it's almost impossible to imagine an "infinite chain of events" as you say, and even more hard it would be to prove it! The human mind can't reach those limits.
On the other hand, believing in an almighty God creator of the universe is also quite hard to figure, but we choose to believe in this last one because of the yearn we have for the existence a life after this.
Hope it helped

I honestly am trying to figure out why you asked this in a religious/spirituality category instead of a Scientific one.
That's like asking a baker to tell you how to rebuild your transmission...
But I digress
In physical cosmology, the Big Bang is the scientific theory of how the universe emerged from a tremendously dense and hot state about 13.7 billion years ago. The theory is based on the observations indicating the expansion of space (in accord with the Robertson-Walker model of general relativity) as indicated by the Hubble redshift of distant galaxies taken together with the cosmological principle.

So long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a creator. But if the universe is completely self-contained, having no boundary or edge, it would neither be created nor destroyed ... it would simply be. What place, then, for a creator?"

Well we can go back to the big bang, and if the universe eventually contracts you have a never ending cycle. We simply don't have all the answers yet, but that doesn't mean we should stop looking and say it magic.

Who really knows. Our minds are way too small to know and even comprehend such things. Don't waste your brain energy thinking of such obscure questions. Trust me.

There is no time, therefore you need to start again. No beginning, no end, no motion, no time.
