It is not a measurement of time. If it was, it would be one year. The light year is a measurement of distance. A light year is how far light can travel in a year. One light year is about 5,874,601,673,407.301 miles or 9,454,254,955,488 kilometers.

I just copied another guy's answer to a question that was basically the same thing. But I hope this is what you were looking for.

A light year is really a measure of distance, not really time. A light year is roughly 186,000 miles. That is how far a beam of light can travel in one year.

The closest sun to our solar system is around 4 light years away, or roughly 750,000 miles.
