First of all for this problem you need a grid: (The post here distorts the layout. If you put this on graph paper, you'll get a better visual of the layout.)

______N__S__T__P__H__St__C__HD

Tom

John

Fred

Bill

Then you begin by charting things you know. For this discussion, and X means not, an O means it is a characteristic of theirs.

Obviously, Tom is not the nurse or the teacher. Since Fred plays golf with the pilot, he cannot be the pilot. Furthermore, since both the burger lover and teacher hate golf, Fred cannot be the teacher or the hamburger lover. Since Tom brought the hot dogs, none of the other types of meat can be his favorite. Bill sat next to the hamburger fan and across from the steak lover, therefore neither of those is his favorite. And since Tom brought the hot dogs all that is left for Bill is the Chicken. John is left as our hamburger lover since all the others have been eliminated. Finally, since we know the secretary hates golf, Fred can't be the secretary because he plays golf with the pilot. The only remaining occupation for Fred is the nurse.

You should begin to see how this is working. Once you have established a characteristic for one of the people, then you can eliminate that possibility from the others. Let's continue the graph.

N S T P H St C HD

Tom X X X O X X X O

John X O X X O X X X

Fred O X X X X O X X

Bill X X O X X X O X

Since we have determined that John is the burger lover, he can't be the pilot, since the burger lover hates golf and the pilot plays golf with Fred. John also cannot be the teacher since the burger lover and the teacher both hate golf and we know John is the burger lover. This leaves one occupation for John, the secretary, which fits perfectly with the fact that the secretary hates golf. Since John is the secretary, this leaves only the pilot for Tom's occupation. The last available occupation for Bill now becomes the teacher.

The big point to get from this is the procedure and the logic flow. You should be able to use this technique on similar problems in the future.

1. tom is neither the nurse or the teacher.

Tom is not the nurse.
Tom is not the teacher.

2. fred and the pilot plat golf together. the burger lover and the teacher hate golf.'

fred is not the pilot.
fred is not the teacher.
fred is not burger.

3. tom brought the hot dogs.

tom is hotdogs.

4.bill sat next to the burger fan and across from the steak lover.

bill is not the burger
bill is not the steak.
Since tom is hotdogs, bill must be chicken.

Since fred is not burger, fred is steak.
john is burger and so john also is not the pilot
john is not the teacher since the burger lover AND the teacher hate golf (not sure because the burger lover can be the teacher)

5. the secretary hates golf.

since fred likes golf, fred is not the secretary. So fred must be the nurse.
John must be the Secretary.

So...

Fred - Steak - Nurse
Tom - Hotdogs - Pilot
John - Burger - Secretary
Bill - Chicken - Teacher

Just for future reference, the best way to solve this kind of problem is to draw a chart and x out the things you know don't go with each guy.

So Tom is the pilot and he bought hot dogs.
John - nurse, hamburgers
Fred - Secretary, Steak
Bill, Teacher, chicken.

:)

so that just pissed me off... i made a chart and just tried to figure that out.... didnt work.

but i know..

the secratary is not the burger lover
tom= hot dogs

heres my interpretation of how they are sitting..

bill.?........llllllllllllllll... steak lvr
..............lltablelll................
brgr........llllllllllllllll.........?.....

so bill could ither be the hot dog guy or chicken guy.

so i confused myself...

i think you might have to find out their occupations first then there fav foods and visa versa... i give up..
