Im seriously concerned about the level of unintelligible english that our kids of today are exhibiting. My 14 year old can spell but it's gotten past a joke with all the abbreviated computer jargon. Waz sup wif dem spll'n lyk spaztic dum azs coz i paid 4dem2 lrn blah blah blah blah blah................. Is the english language going to become instinct, Im worried that when I hit 80 and my children write me an email, that I may need some decoding book just to get past the greeting. Please take a look at this classic example I stumbled on in yahoo answers which led me to ask this question, you will be amazed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shakespeare spoke elegant english, and it could always be understood, so the male that talks about the english language evolving......WHY DO THE WORDS PROVE OTHERWISE. sup, dat, dis, fulz, dosnt sound very evoved to me, it shows the falacies in evolution. I use the odd abbreviated word but do not make an entire sentance out of them. Dont insult Shakespeare.

It seriously sucks.
I'm twelve, and my friends always ask me why I supposedly "type so properly." I know I don't type correctly all the time. I just type in an actual language. Online, all my friend tipe lyk diz because it is supposedly a shorter way to type things, which it really isn't. It's much more easier to type in English, because you don't have to think of random letters to replace certain words. Not only that, but most people cannot read it. It takes a while to read, and you just have to make assumptions because you really don't know what they're typing. I don't mind if people spell a few words wrong or don't make every single little word perfect, but it should at least be something people can understand. Also, it just makes you look plain stupid. Stupid that you don't know simple English words, and it just sounds like a challenged person is typing. It's ridiculous. I cannot for the life of me understand how on earth it can be "cool" or "easier to type", or why you would want to type like it. It makes you look immature, and I do not wish to talk to people like that.

Also:
Colleen O, of course I know that my school isn't the only one in the world, but of all the schools I went to in two different states, spelling actually was and still is stressed. Spelling and grammar counts. If there is a word wrong, you get points taken off. Hopefully more schools can be like this.

The reason kids can't spell nowadays is because schools do not stress spelling. Teachers have been, for years accepting homework and classroom assignments fraught with mis-spelled words and missing punctuation. There interest is not in whether the spelling is correct as long as the student is able to get their "idea" across. A student that will take the time and effort to spell and punctuate correctly gets the same grade on his papers as the student who hands in a mess. It is all a part of the "lets be fair" idolatry that schools adopted some 20 years ago. This is why schools grade on the curve nowadays as well, it is that "no child left behind" thing, but the schools are missing the point. It isn't that no child should not be left behind for whatever reason, it is if the child is falling behind (in spelling for instance) then it is up to the school to take THAT child aside and find a way for the child to learn to spell and punctuate correctly in order to get ahead. What is truly sad is that when these non-spellers try to gain employment their applications as well as resumes are unintelligible and wind up in the shredder. When one attempts to stress this fact to the young they don't believe it because life HAS to be fair, they said so in school.

Do you think they worried about how language changed with the start of the colonies? The English of Shakespeare is not the English we speak today.

Language evolves over time. Hopefully though it moves in a timely way that does not leave the vast majority behind.

dont feel like the Lone Ranger, and I just gave away my age with that one !!! I am so confused about the language kids use, I often just smile and shake my head, praying I am not agreeing to something horrible... I guess it was the same for each generation tho, a new language to understand, I doubt my parents understood 1/2 of what I said, even tho I dont recall talking all that goofy........ *sigh*, the language is just another sign that our young folk are loosing what we call values..... it is not just the abbreviations its the words they use too, and most of them are in the dictionary !!! God bless

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I have to re-read some of the posts to try and decipher what these kids are saying. All that adding "z" when it should be an "s" or something makes my head hurt. Many times I just run over it because I don't have time to figure it out!

I understand your concerns. What is sad is that this type of spelling and poor grammar has become acceptable in some business as well. I am increasingly frustrated at work with people using made up acronyms and other abbreviations in work correspondence. I don't do it myself.

I have noticed that with a lot of people who type in questions on Yahoo Answers. How can I give a good answer if I cannot understand a word they are saying? There's a spell check on here too, so use it if you can't spell a word correctly.
