www.travelocity.com

There is not ONE website with the best hotel rates. I found that you have to keep comparing other wise you spend too much.

In general, try www.kayak.com it is a search engine that scans over 150 websites though they are paid to promote certain websites. Go direct to the hotel website or call them.

For the USA, www.expedia.com, www.orbitz.com, or www.hotels.com

For Asia, www.asiarooms.com, contrary to what the hoteliers say, they have room prices lower than posted internet discounts rates direct from the hotel.

Another general website for hotels is www.hotelclub.com, it is a free membership site. They will give you 3 percent back in credits on the next booking each time you use them for booking a hotel. I have booked flights through them and it worked out well.

Again, you have to periodically check to make sure the website is getting good deals from the hotels.

Good luck

I am so glad you asked. I work front desk at a hotel and if I could tell the world one thing it would be "never book your room on the net". You are being charged their rate, plus the 10% fee for the internet company... orbitz, expedia, priceline, hotels.com, they are all the same. And you know how they say they'll alert you if the hotel you have reservations on is having problems? Well that's a lie in fact they have no way of knowing these things. Also when you book on the net (most people dont know this) it is only guarenteeing that you have room.... not what kind of room. Your request is only that... a request. I can't say who I work for, but It's a major major chain 3 star hotel. And most of the time when internet reservations come in, they've paid as much or more then we could have given them if they'd have called directly.

I have to commend Smitten on points of why not to book online. However you don't have to go directly through a hotel to get always the best prices. In fact there are several vendors that agents work through, some that work through consumers others that only work through agents. These vendors have pre-contracted rates that they can sell a hotel with. The vendors that get the best rates tend to be the ones that sell the most of that hotel. This is something a good agent can search for you.

Travelaxe.com

They only have big cities like NYC, Las Vegas, Boston, vancouver Seattle etc but they have the best comparisons of a dozen of the travel sites most people check one at a time. They highlight for each day of your stay who has the cheapest price and then have totals you can compare. They also let you arrange by specific area in a city and let you filter by price or quality.

Every travel site you can think of is already included in travelaxe (including the ones run by the hotel chains themselves) so it is a big time saver.

None of them do. Some of them have some good deals, but none of them have all the best deals.

They advertise the hot deals to try to get you to buy the not so hot deals. It's all about marketing. Take Marketing 101 in junior college.
